Baseball Beaten by Arizona State in Midweek Game

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Arizona State scored early and often, beating Santa Clara baseball 21-1 Monday afternoon.

The Sun Devils (15-19) put up three in the first and scored in seven of the nine innings against nine different Broncos (17-14) pitchers, hanging a loss on Alex Reelfs (3-4) who allowed five runs on four hits with three walks and a strikeout in an inning-plus of work.

In all, Arizona State pounded out 22 hits, took 12 walks, and benefitted from two hit-by-pitches. Seven different Sun Devils had multi-hit games with 11 collecting at least one hit. They also had 12 players pick up at least one RBI and five with multiple RBIs.

Arizona State starter Boyd Vander Koi (1-0) picked up his first win of the year in 2 1/3 innings of work. He allowed two hits with a walk and a strikeout. Four other pitchers appeared as well.

Thomas Gould's RBI double got Santa Clara on the board in the ninth. Nick Bacura, who entered in the sixth, ended up 2-for-2 with seven others collecting a hit each. The highlight was the first career collegiate hit for Malcolm Williams, a single in the sixth.

  • Coleman Brigman's on-base streak ended at 29 games.
  • Julian Tristan made his season debut after making the comeback from Tommy John Surgery. His last game action was 2021 Opening Day.
