Mike Oakland begins his fifth season as an assistant coach and second as the recruiting coordinator for the Santa Clara staff after serving the previous five years under head coach Ritch Price at Cal Poly, including the final two years as the lead assistant.

During his first four seasons on the Mission Campus, Oakland guided the Bronco offense to three seasons with a team batting average of .290 or higher. He helped two players garner All-America status following a year in which they struggled. His first season he helped Joey Gomes go from a .221 hitter in 2001 to a .408 hitter with 31 doubles in 2002. Gomes was honored with first team All-America honors following his senior season in which he also finished second in the nation in doubles.

Then in 2003, Oakland helped Scott Dierks to one of the most prolific offensive years in SCU history. Dierks, who batted .264 with no home runs in 2002, busted out with a .394 average and 18 home runs in 2003. His numbers were good enough for WCC Co-Player of the Year honors as well as honorable mention All-America accolades.

In 2004, the Broncos combined to hit .299 as a team with eight different players posting batting averages of .300 or higher.

In addition to his on-field duties, Oakland serves as the academic liaison for his players and the department's compliance office. Oakland also coordinates all in-season and out-of-season compliance logs, as well as the admission of incoming student-athletes. He also assists in the planning and development of the annual fund-raising golf tournament and the youth baseball camps.

During the summers of 1998 and 1999 Oakland took over the reigns as the head coach of the Anchorage Bucs of the Alaska Summer Collegiate League after serving as the assistant the previous two years under Mark O'Brien. Oakland led the Bucs to a first place finish in 1998 in the Alaskan league and a seventh place finish at the NBC Summer World Series. In 1999 Oakland led the Bucs to a second place finish in the league and a fourth place finish in the NBC Summer World Series.

As a player Oakland was considered to be one of the best to have ever worn the Cal Poly uniform, earning California Collegiate Athletic Association and West Region MVP honors during his junior year. Oakland also garnered Division II All-America accolades as well as the Cal Poly Mustang Team Sports Male Athlete of the Year award. In 1992 Oakland hit .341 with 12 doubles, three home runs, and 60 runs batted in. The 60 runs batted in still ranks as the fifth best total in Cal Poly history.

Following his stellar collegiate career at Cal Poly, the Colorado Rockies drafted Oakland in the 22nd round of the 1992 Major League Baseball amateur draft. He spent four years in the Rockies' organization and played in the first-ever game at Coors Field in 1994.

Oakland married the former Dina Moore, a four-time Division II All-America track star at Cal Poly. The couple welcomed their first child, Jessica on May 6, 2004.
