SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Jamie Holmes scored 18 points and three others reached double figures as Santa Clara defeated Murray State 77-72 Tuesday night.

Brian Jones added 16 points, Steve Ross had 15 and Kyle Bailey had 11 for the Broncos (7-7), who won their third game in the last four.

Antione Whelcel scored 18 points for the Racers (5-6), who lost their fifth game in the last six. Freshman center Andi Horning had a game-high 10 rebounds.

Isaac Spencer added 16 points and Chris Shumate had 12 for Murray State, playing its first game ever in California. The Racers played seven of their last nine games on the road.

The Broncos held a 73-66 lead after Jones went 1-of-2 from the foul line with 1:04 left, but Murray State drew to within 73-72 on three-pointers from Whelcel and Shumate.

The Broncos were 4-of-4 from the foul line in the final 10 seconds to stave off the rally.

After Justin Burdine sank a three-pointer to give Murray State a 40-27 lead at the beginning of the second half, the Broncos scored 19 unanswered points, to take a 46-40 lead with 15:10 remaining to play.

Santa Clara extended that lead to 54-43 four minutes later following a pair of free throws from Holmes.

Ross hit a three-pointer with just over six minutes left in the first half to give Santa Clara a 23-22 edge, but the Racers went on a 15-4 run to take a 37-27 lead at halftime.

Murray State lost for just the second time in six games this season when leading at halftime.
