Ross Named WCC Player of the Week

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Santa Clara University junior Steve Ross was named the West Coast Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week after recording consecutive double-doubles in the Broncos' two wins last week over San Francisco and Saint Mary's, the league office announced today.

Ross, a native of Victoria, British Columbia, scored a career-high 23 points to along with 10 rebounds in Santa Clara's 72-56 win over Saint Mary's College Saturday in Moraga. He went 6-for-11 from the field and 9-for-11 from the free throw line while also blocking a shot, handing out two assists and grabbing two steals in the win.

The previous night, Ross scored 15 points and grabbed 10 boards in a 63-52 win over San Francisco at War Memorial Gymnasium. Against the Dons, he went 2-for-5 from behind the three-point arc and shot 5-for-6 from the free throw line.

A junior transfer from the University of San Diego, Ross is third on the team in scoring with an average of 11.4 points per game and is grabbing a second-best 5.5 boards per contest. In conference play, he is averaging 12.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Ross has led the Broncos in scoring in each of the last three games and is averaging 19 points and 8.7 rebounds during that time.

Santa Clara is 16-11 on the season and 8-4 in the WCC. The Broncos are currently in sole possession of third-place in the league standings with two games left on the regular-season schedule. Santa Clara is one game ahead of San Diego and two games behind Pepperdine in the league standings. Ross is the second Bronco to be honored by the league as the Player of the Week this saeson. Senior Brian Jones earned the honor on Dec. 4 after scoring a season-high 32 points in the Broncos' win over Chattanooga.
