Bronco Men's Basketball Announces 2001-2002 Schedule

May 25, 2001

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University basketball team continues its tradition of playing one of the most challenging non-conference schedules in the nation this season with three games against teams from the Pacific-10 Conference, two from the Western Athletic Conference and a trip to one of the Big Ten Conference's traditional powers.

The Broncos open the season at the Leavey Center against Pacific, a squad that went 18-12 last season and advanced to the championship game of the Big West Conference Tournament. The non-conference home schedule also includes games against South Bay rival San Jose State (14-14), Chico State (11-14) and the 35th annual Cable Car Classic. This year's Classic includes National Invitation Tournament semifinalist Detroit (25-12), Maryland-Baltimore County (18-11) and UC-Santa Barbara (13-15). The Broncos wrap-up the non-conference schedule with a home game against Loyola College (6-23) from Maryland.

Santa Clara plays seven road games during the non-conference preseason portion of the schedule. The Broncos are on the road against three teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season, at California (20-11) and Ohio State (20-11) in addition to the annual Stanford Invitational, which includes host Stanford (31-3), Portland State (9-18) and Belmont University (13-15). The Broncos also play at Washington (10-20), Nevada (10-18) and Wright State (18-11).

For the second-straight season, Bronco fans will be treated to a major renovation of Santa Clara's home court - The Leavey Center. Phase two of construction began in March and, when completed, will include new upper level seating with reserved chairback seating, a club suite, new concession areas and improved lower-level sightlines in the corner sections.
