Santa Clara Men's Basketball Opens Exhibition Season Monday

Nov. 5, 2000

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The 2000-01 version of the Santa Clara University men's basketball team will make its debut Monday night in an exhibition game against the California All-Stars, a team of former college players who reside on the West Coast. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Bellarmine College Prep.

The contest is the first of two exhibition games scheduled for the Broncos prior to its season-opener against Utah State on Nov. 16 in the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska. Both exhibition games are scheduled to be played at Bellarmine Prep due to the renovation of the Leavey Event Center. Santa Clara will open its regular-season home schedule on Dec. 13 against Fresno State.

The California All-Stars have a 0-5 record heading into today's 3 p.m. game at Arizona. Based in Chatsworth and sponsored by Double Pump Inc., the squad will have played six games in as many days going into Monday's contest against Santa Clara. Going into Sunday's game the All-Stars have averaged 83.0 points per game, but have given up 98.0 points per game.

Santa Clara returns three starters from last year's squad that ended the 1999-2000 season with a 19-12 record and fourth-place finish in the West Coast Conference. Senior co-captain Brian Jones (Carson, Calif.) returns with a chance to become the school's all-time assist and steals leader and has a shot at the scoring title. Senior co-captain Jamie Holmes (Merced, Calif.) and junior center David Emslie (Seattle, Wash.) are returning starters to the Bronco front-line.

Santa Clara will host its final exhibition contest on Sunday against Korabel, a club team from Ukraine, in a 2 p.m. tip-off at Bellarmine College Prep. Following the first game against Utah State, the Broncos will face either South Florida or Davidson in the second round of the Top of the World Classic. Other tournament participants are Alaska-Fairbanks, Austin Peay, Colorado and Jackson State.
