Santa Clara Men's Basketball Drops Overtime Exhibition Contest

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's basketball team dropped an overtime 98-96 decision to the California All-Stars in its first exhibition game of the 2000-01 season Monday night at Bellarmine Prep.

Junior forward Justin Holbrook (Cottage Grove, Ore.) led all scorers with 22 points in the contest. He shot 9-for-11 from the field, including 3-for-5 from the three-point stripe. Holbrook was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field in the first half and had 15 points at the break. Former University of Pacific standout Corey Anderson led the All-Stars with 21 points.

Santa Clara grabbed an 18-point lead when junior forward Andre Bobbitt (Riverbank, Calif.) connected on a layup at the 2:25 mark of the first half. The All-Stars countered with a 13-4 run over the next 5:35 to cut the lead to nine points early in the second half. The Broncos trailed by three points late in the game before senior Brian Jones (Carson, Calif.) nailed a three-point field goal to tie the score at 86-apiece with just :33 seconds left on the clock in regulation. The All-Stars outscored Santa Clara by a narrow 12-10 margin in overtime.

Tonight's contest is the first of two exhibition games scheduled for the Broncos prior to its season-opener against Utah State on Nov. 16 in the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska. Both exhibition games will be played at Bellarmine Prep due to the renovation of the Leavey Event Center. Santa Clara will open its regular-season home schedule on Dec. 13 against Fresno State. Santa Clara will host its final exhibition contest on Sunday against Korabel, a club team from Ukraine, in a 2 p.m. tip-off at Bellarmine College Prep.
