Nov. 27, 2000

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The college basketball bragging rights to Santa Clara County are on the line Wednesday in the "Clash of the County," the annual men's basketball game between Santa Clara and San Jose State. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at SJSU's Event Center following the SJSU vs. Santa Clara women's contest, which is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.

Santa Clara has won six of the last seven games between the two teams, including a current streak of three-straight. The last six contests have been played at the San Jose Arena and were labeled the Mayor's Cup. The two teams have decided to return to the home-and-home format for the next several years with San Jose State hosting this year's contest due to the renovation of the Leavey Event Center.

The Broncos enter the game with a 2-2 record following a disappointing 61-43 loss at Pacific last week. The Broncos shot just 28 percent from the field and went 0-for-14 from beyond the three-point arc in the loss. Previously, the Broncos had won two of its first three games of the year at the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Senior Brian Jones (Carson, Calif.) leads the Broncos in scoring with a 14.5 per game average. Senior co-captain Jamie Holmes is the team's rebounding leader with 6.0 boards per game and is second in scoring with a 13.8 per game average. Holmes has led Santa Clara in scoring in three of its four games this season and was named to the all-tournament team at the Top of the World Classic.

San Jose State is 3-0 on the season with overtime wins over Cal State-Hayward and UC-Riverside and an 82-68 win over Saint Mary's College. The Spartans are averaging 70.0 points per game and 41.3 rebounds, while shooting over 40 percent from the field in its first three contests.
