SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Brian Jones scored 18 of his season-high 25 points in the second half as Santa Clara defeated San Jose State 71-56 on Wednesday night.

Jamie Holmes scored 12 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Broncos (3-2) beat their neighboring county rivals for the fourth straight year.

Mike Garrett scored 15 points to lead San Jose State (3-1), which was trying to open the season with four straight wins for the first time since 1963. Instead, it was the Broncos who won their fourth-straight against SJSU and have never lost a game played against the Spartans at SJSU's Event Center.

Garrett has led the Spartans in scoring in all four games to date.

Jones was 9-of-16 from the floor for Santa Clara, which shot 52 percent as a team. San Jose State was limited to 36 percent shooting and was just 50 percent from the foul line.

Santa Clara scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 38-31 lead, then continued to extend its lead to 54-36 with just under 13 minutes remaining to play. The Spartans never got closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

David Emslie converted a three-point play to give Santa Clara a 27-20 lead with 6:20 remaining in the first half, but the Spartans closed out the half with a 13-4 run to take a 33-31 lead with Cory Powell scoring the go-ahead basket into the intermission.
