The Santa Clara University's men's basketball team held an open scrimmage on Thursday night to gauge where it stands 12 days before the preseason opener on November 6.
Senior preseason All-WCC forward Steve Ross (Victoria, B.C.) led the Broncos in scoring, pouring in 19 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the floor, including 5-for-9 from behind the three-point line. Ethan Rohde (Seattle, Wash.) chipped in 13 points while Jason Morrissette (Los Angeles, Calif.) added 11.
Cord Anderson cleaned up on the boards, grabbing a team-high 14 rebounds in the game. Freshman Jordan Legge (Mesa, Ariz.) was impressive on the boards, snatching five offensive and five defensive rebounds in addition to his eight points.
The scrimmage helped Broncos head coach Dick Davey get a clearer picture of exactly where his squad stands. "We showed tonight that we have a lot of room for improvement," said Davey, "but we are encouraged because continue to improve each day."
The Broncos mixed and matched their 13 players to form two teams that played on both the red and white teams. Only Kyle Bailey was forced to miss Thursday night's scrimmage due to a sprained ankle which should only keep him out of action for another day or two.
"We did have a few guys playing out of position, which hurt the flow of the game a little, but we did learn some good things about the guys tonight," said Davey
As a team the two Bronco squads combined to shot only 37 pct. (34-92) from the floor, but managed a respectable 41 pct. (14-34) from behind the arc.
The Broncos will continue preparations for the beginning of the season with an exhibition game on November 6. Santa Clara will renew a tradition that dates back to 1917 as the Broncos will face the Olympic Club in an exhibition game at the Compaq Center at San Jose. Admission to the game is free with the tipoff set for 7:30 p.m.
