UCSB 86, Detroit 59

Dec. 29, 2001

UC Santa Barbara head coach Bob Williams
On his team's performance against UDM:
"I thought we defended them well tonight, especially in the first half. We came out aggressively and maybe surprised them a little bit. We jumped on them on both sides of the ball in the first half, playing aggressive offensively and defensively.

On his team's balanced scoring attack:
"Yeah it's good when we have five guys score in double-figures and another guy with nine points which is probably the best balance we have had all year. I was pretty pleased overall offensively tonight with the way we played, especially in the first half. We moved the ball well, we attacked and we got good contribution out of our post players."

On Santa Clara:
"I didn't get to see a whole lot of Santa Clara tonight. I know they are not playing as well as they are accustomed to right now, but I also know they have probably the best coach on the west coast in Dick Davey. Traditionally his teams have gotten better and better. I do know that tonight when I walked in they were down by 10 and they ended up winning, so that tells you a little bit about their character."

Detroit-Mercy head coach Perry Watson
On his team's performance against UCSB:
"Well we didn't play well tonight. It is the worst we have played this year. We are just in a little funk right now and just out of it mentally. Not to take any credit away from Santa Barbara, I thought they played really well tonight."

Looking ahead to the consolation game against UMBC:
"They are a good team, they play very hard. We need to re-group and come out and compete right from the beginning. Everything starts on the defensive end which will be the key for us tomorrow."

On what his team must do to get it going offensively:
"I think that our offense comes from our defense. We don't normally shoot the ball as bad as we shot it tonight and when you don't have any energy on the defensive end it affects you offensively."
