UMBC Takes Consolation Title at Cable Car Classic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Two free throws by Ron Yates with a minute remaining and another by Andre Williams with 16 seconds left lifted Maryland-Baltimore County over Detroit 50-47 in the consolation game of the Cable Car Classic on Saturday.

UMBC (6-5) trailed Detroit (6-6) 29-22 at halftime, but took a 42-40 lead with 7:50 remaining after a 9-1 run.

Yates his the two free throws with 1:02 left. Greg Grays hit a three-point shot for Detroit with 21 seconds to go, making it 49-47, but the Titans could get no closer.

Andrew Feeley was the only UMBC player to score in double figures. He had 10 points. Willie Green of Detroit led all scorers with 15 points.

Both teams shot poorly. UMBC made just 35 percent of its shots and Detroit made just 26 percent.

Tournament host Santa Clara defeated UC-Santa Barbara in the championship game.
