SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Jim Howell scored 19 points as Santa Clara defeated Pepperdine 73-61 on Sunday to end its season-longest four-game losing streak.

Bakari Altheimer added 12 points as the Broncos (12-11, 3-7 in the West Coast Conference) also ended a four-game home losing streak to the Waves.

Terrance Johnson scored 21 points to lead Pepperdine (13-11, 5-6), which had a two-game winning streak stopped. Alex Acker added 16.

The Waves, who lead the WCC in scoring, were held to their lowest offensive output since losing to Utah 77-61 on Dec. 20.

Pepperdine were held to 37 percent shooting, its worst performance in 12 games.

Santa Clara produced its best offensive effort since a 77-71 win over Princeton on Dec. 28, and shot 54 percent, the first time in 12 games the Broncos shot better than 48 percent.

Cord Anderson's three-point play gave the Broncos a 47-36 advantage with 16:15 remaining to play.

Pepperdine closed to within 51-49 four minutes later but Santa Clara went on a 14-4 run to regain control. Scott Borchart scored seven of his 11 points during the rally.

Santa Clara led by as many as nine points in the early going, taking a 31-22 edge on Alex Kargbo's jumper. The Waves responded with a 9-0 run to knot things up.

After Johnson hit a 3-pointer with 1:53 left in the first half to make it 31-all, the Broncos scored the final five points to take a 36-31 halftime lead.
