The 37th Cable Car Classic - By The Numbers

Dec. 28, 2003

Here's a look at both the history of the 37-year-old Cable Car Classic and this year's field in a little different way... by the numbers. This year's event is scheduled for Dec. 29-30 at the Leavey Center on the Santa Clara University campus.

0 - Number of times 2003 tournament participants Idaho State and Wisconsin-Milwaukee have appeared in the Cable Car Classic prior to this year.

1.1 - Number of seconds left on the clock when Kyle Bailey banked home the winning shot in a 59-58 first round victory over UMBC in the 2001 event. The next night Bailey led the Broncos to a 61-59 win over UC-Santa Barbara and was named Tournament MVP.

2 - Number of players named Michael Jordan who have played in the Cable Car Classic. One was the well-known All-American from the University of North Carolina. The other was a guard from the University of Pennsylvania. Interestingly, the Michael Jordan from Penn earned all-tournament honors. The one from Carolina didn't

2 - Number of the most tournament championships won by a non-Bay Area team, shared by the University of Alabama and Brigham Young University.

2 - Number of Tournament MVP honors won by current members of the Santa Clara squad. Kyle Bailey won the award in 2001 and Ethan Rohde earned the honor in 2002.

3 - Longest win streak of championships by any single team when Santa Clara won the 1982, 1983 and 1984 Cable Car Classic titles. Former Bronco Harold Keeling was named all-tournament in all three events and won the 1982 MVP honors.

3 - Number of Cable Car Classic titles won by Dick Davey as a head coach. He has led the Broncos to eight championship game appearances in his 11 appearances in the tournament heading into the 2003 event.

4 - Number of the most frequent appearances by teams from outside the Bay Area, shared by Alabama, Brigham Young (ties the mark in 2003) and St. Joseph's.

7 - Number of host sites for the Cable Car Classic, including the Civic Auditorium, the Cow Palace, War Memorial Gymnasium, Oakland Coliseum Arena, Toso Pavilion, the San Jose Arena and the Leavey Center.

Much to the chagrin of Santa Clara fans, the loss prevented a Sampson vs. Kurt Rambis showdown in the championship game.
