BYU Advances To Cable Car Championship

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Rafael Araujo had game highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead Brigham Young over Idaho State 90-66 Monday night in the second semifinal game of the Cable Car Classic.

Luiz Lemes added 20 points and Mike Hall 15 for Brigham Young (8-2), which will play Santa Clara Tuesday for the tournament title. BYU controlled the game most of the first half, and an 11-0 run gave the Cougars a 31-20 lead with 6:27 left.

Idaho State (3-8) answered with 12 straight points to trail 33-27 with 2:07 remaining, but Brigham Young had a stronger answer. The Cougars scored the final eight points of the half to regain the momentum and scored the first nine of the second half for a 48-27 advantage with 18:08 left in the game.

Lemes's three-point shot with 15:11 left gave BYU its largest lead at 56-30. Idaho State made another run, scoring 10 consecutive points, nine of them on three-point shots by Jeff Gardner, to trail 58-43.

A three-point shot by Nade Redes made it 62-50 at 9:45, but that was as close as the Bengals got. Gardner hit seven of 10 shots - five of six from three-point range - and scored 22 points. Marquis Poole added 11 points and Scott Henry 10 for the Bengals.
