Wheaties Honors Steve Nash

April 27, 2006

PHOENIX, Ariz (Wire Services) - Reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns is being recognized with another honor -- his own Wheaties box. The package was unveiled recently at the US Airways Center. Nash is the first Suns player to appear on the Wheaties box.

Nash, currently averaging more than 19 points and leading the league with over 10 assists per game, has his Suns poised for another strong playoff run. During last year's MVP season, Nash led his team into the Western Conference Finals before losing to the eventual NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs. In addition to his 2005 MVP Award, Nash is a four-time All-Star and was named All-NBA First Team in 2004-05, and All-NBA Third Team in 2001-02 and 2002-03. Nash has consistently been among the league leaders in assists, double-doubles, and free throw shooting percentage.

"Appearing on the Wheaties box is a great honor for me," Nash said. "The list of basketball greats who have been on the box through the years is legendary, with guys like Jordan, Bird, West and Cousy. I'm honored to be included among that group."

The 6-3 Canadian grew up playing soccer, and only began playing organized basketball in the eighth grade. He twice earned West Coast Conference Player of the Year honors while playing college ball at Santa Clara University in California. A 1996 first-round draft pick of the Suns, Nash was later traded to the Dallas Mavericks, where he played six seasons before returning to the Suns as a free agent prior to the 2004 season.

Nash has made significant contributions off the court as well, including founding The Steve Nash Foundation in 2001 to help underserved children in their development and education.

"Steve Nash provides a great source of inspiration for anyone who is reaching for their dream," said Eric Treschuk, Wheaties Marketing Manager. "No one works harder or plays the game more unselfishly, but his dedication and perseverance truly set him apart. Wheaties is thrilled to welcome him into the family."

"The NBA is extremely pleased to be a part of the longstanding Wheaties tradition of honoring the best athletes in sports," said Mark Tatum, Senior Vice President of Marketing Partnerships for the NBA.

The new 12- and 18-ounce Steve Nash Wheaties packages will be sold nationally by the end of April.
