Five SCU Basketball Players Earn WCC Scholar-Athlete Honors

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The 2011 West Coast Conference Winter All-Academic teams honor some of the league's finest examples of the consummate scholar-athletes. Santa Clara University had five basketball players named among the league's best: Sr. Michael Santos (Occidental, Calif./Cardinal Newman), Jr. Marc Trasolini (Vancouver, B.C., Canada/Vancouver College HS), So. Ashley Armstrong (Reno, Nev./Bishop Manogue), So. Meagan Fulps (Littleton, Colo./Highlands Ranch) and So. Lindsay Leo (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty).

Following the completion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each of the participating sponsored sports. A total of 11 players are making a repeat appearance on the Winter All-Academic Teams, including six three-time honorees.  
   
"The West Coast Conference is very proud to honor and recognize these exceptional student-athletes," said WCC Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich. "Their strong commitment to academic success is evident as, once again this year, we recognize repeat honorees, including several three-time recipients."  
   
This year's men's group features eight players making a repeat appearance on the WCC's All-Academic Team in Pepperdine's Gus Clardy,Taylor Darby and Corbin Moore; Portland's Kramer Knutson, San Diego's Matt Dorr and Devin Ginty; and Santa Clara's Santos and Trasolini. This marks the third appearance for Clardy, Ginty, Knutson and Santos.  

Trasolini - a two-time Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team honoree - owns a 3.55 cum. GPA as a Finance major. Trasolini averaged over 12 points per game last season and has scored over 1,000 career points. He also ranks fourth all-time at Santa Clara in blocked shots. Santos is a Business Management major, who owns a 3.29 cum. GPA as a four-year student-athlete at SCU. Santos was a key part of the Broncos' 2011 CIT Championship team.

On the women's side, making the WCC's All-Academic Team for the third consecutive year are Gonzaga's Janelle Bekkering and Portland's Tara Cronin, while San Francisco's Vania Singleterry is making the team for the second time. Armstrong, Fulps and Leo each made the WCC's All-Academic Team on their first year of eligibility.

Armstrong owns an outstanding 3.88 cum. GPA as an Anthropology major. Classmate Meagan Fulps, who was the Broncos' leading scorer for the majority of the 2010-11 season, has a 3.59 cum. GPA in Communication and Leo's cum. GPA is at 3.26 in Finance.
