The Broncos opened their foreign tour action tonight in Langley, British Columbia vs. Trinity Western with three Broncos scoring double-doubles and Kevin Foster knocking down five threes, including one at the regulation buzzer to push the game to overtime, but the Spartans topped Santa Clara 108-100 in the extra period. The game was played under international basketball rules, which features four quarters, a 24-second shot clock, the ball being live when it hits the rim, if a timeout is called the ball moves to the sideline and a wider key.
Santa Clara shot 40.2 percent, including 28.6 percent from beyond the arc. The Broncos were 14 of 24 from the free throw line (58.3 percent). They collected 59 rebounds, 18 assists, 11 steals and turned the ball over 27 times. Trinity Western shot 42.5 percent, including 37.9 percent. The Spartans were 29 of 38 from the free throw line (76.3 percent). They collected 49 rebounds, 19 assists, 14 steals and turned the ball over 21 times.
Scoring double-doubles were Niyi Harrison (17 points, 11 rebounds), John McArthur (12 points, 14 rebounds) and Foster (23 points, 11 rebounds). Raymond Cowels III scored 13 points and Evan Roquemore 10. Cowels and Roquemore both tallied four assists. Foster hit five threes and grabbed a game-high seven steals, but turned the ball over eight times.
The Spartans were led by Calvin Westbrook's 32 points. Kyle Coston collected 29 points and 14 rebounds, turing the ball over seven times. Sean Peter scored 17 points and Tristan Smith scored 10.
Starting for the Broncos were Marc Trasolini, Harrison, Roquemore, Cowels III and Foster. First off the bench was McArthur, replacing an injured Trasolini, who didn't return for the game.
After the Spartans opened with a 4-0 run, Santa Clara answered on a 10-0 run, including baskets by Roquemore, the first, and back-to-back baskets by Foster, including a three-pointer. Foster led the nation last year in threes made with 140. Harrison also added an and-one to make it 10-6.
After a Spartan basket at 6:42. McArthur tipped in a Yannick Atanga miss to make it 12-8 at 4:32. Foster followed up with two free throws at 3:42 to make it 14-8.
Phillip Bach, Brandon Clark and Julian Clarke all checked in after the made free throws for their first action of the game. After a made free throw by the Spartans, Clarke pushed a floater in to put the Broncos up by seven, 16-9 at 2:52. Trinity Western scored back-to-back baskets to pull within three at 1:00.
Checking in at 1:00 were Jordan Akwenuke, Robert Garrett, Denzel Johnson and Karim York to team up with Foster for their first action in a Bronco uniform. The Spartans scored at :45.3 and the Broncos turned it over at :25.4, 16-15 Broncos.
Santa Clara took a 16-15 lead into the start of the second quarter. The Spartans took a 17-16 lead at 9:53. After the Spartans turned the ball over traveling, Johnson sank the first three-point basket of his career in college at 8:59. TWU tied it up with a three of its own and took the lead on a free throw by Sean Peter at 8:35.
Calvin Westbrook sank a three at 8:15 to make it 23-19 at 7:59. Roquemore checked back in and scored quickly but Tristian Smith crushed a three, 27-21 Spartans at 7:32. Harrison sank back-to-back baskets, 29-25 Spartans.
Kyle Coston sank a three at 5:15, 33-25 Spartans. Cowels sank a three, but again the Spartans responded at 3:42, 36-28 Broncos. TWU scored a three-point play to make it 39-28 Spartans at 3:11. A Bronco basket followed one by the Spartans.
The Spartans whistled for time at :30.3, up 41-32. Hitting two free throws at :25.8, Santa Clara's Foster responded with a two-pointer at :07.2 and then Akwenuke stole the ball and tossed it to Foster who crushed a three at the buzzer. Halftime was 43-37 Spartans.
SCU shot 35.7 percent, including 22.2 percent in the first half. The Spartans shot 43.2 percent, including 27.3 percent from beyond the arc. Santa Clara had 25 rebounds to TWU's 24 and the Spartans were 8 of 13 from the charity stripe, with the Broncos hitting three of three.
Foster led the Broncos with 10 points at halftime. Harrison added nine and McArthur scored six. McArthur led the team with nine rebounds, with Harrison adding five. Roquemore had a team-leading three assists. Peter had 15 points for the Spartans with Westbrook scoring 11.
Santa Clara started the second half on a 10-2 run, including a three by Roquemore at 8:58. Up three after a Harrison free throw, Westbrook sank a way-out three and Coston hit a free throw, 49-43 Spartans.
Clark's two make it 49-45 Spartans at 6:59. Harrison's rebound of a missed York shot cut the lead to three at 6:11, 50-47 Spartans. Roquemore's three at 5:46, his second of the third quarter, tied it up 50-50.
After a steal, a wide-open Westbrook scored two for the Spartans. Clark sank a three to give the Broncos their first lead since 9:52 in the second quarter. But it was short-lived as Westbrook scored another three with McArthur tying it up at 4:35, 55-55.
Kyle Perricone checked in at 4:27. Scoring two at 3:28, Coston hit two free throws to push the Spartans lead to four, 59-55 at 3:13. After a goal-tending call on Atanga's shot, Akwenuke stole the ball and Clarke drove the lane to pick up a foul. Clarke made one, 59-58 Spartans at 2:40. After two Spartan free throws, Clarke stepped to the line again and sank one, 61-60 Spartans at 1:58.
Atanga leaped in the air HIGH and tipped in a Johnson miss, tying it up at 61 at 1:22. Two more Spartan free throws made it 63-61 Spartans at 1:17. Nick Lamson checked in. Atanga was fouled and he sank one to pull the Bronos within one, 63-62 at 1:08.
Roquemore went down hard at :47.2 and left the game. Clark stepped in to shoot Roquemore's free throws, making one, tying it up 63-63. With five Bronco true-freshmen on the floor, the Spartans scored once in the last 30 seconds to take a 65-63 lead to the fourth quarter.
Cowels three at 9:38 gave the Broncos a one-point lead, 66-65. TWU scored at 8:42. Harrison was fouled hard at 8:12, hitting a free throw to tie up again. Eli Mara's three was followed by Foster's own, 70-70 at 6:58. Coston hit another three before Harrison scored from inside. Foster's softball pass to Harrison was tossed to McArthur for two, 74-73 Broncos at 5:38.
A fumbled ball under by both teams resulted in a wide-open slam for Coston. McArthur scored inside again, 76-75. A free throw by Mara tied it up 76-76. Coston crushed another three, but Foster answered with a two in the lane, 79-78 Spartans at 4:13. Coston hit another three, his fourth of the game, 82-78 Spartans.
Timeout Broncos at 3:09. Another Spartan three made it 85-78 Spartans at 2:49. After a missed Foster three, York grabbed the rebound and dumped it in for two, 85-80 Spartans. Coston danced in the lane to score again, 87-80 Spartans.
Foster was fouled shooting a three and he made two of three at 1:13, 87-82 Spartans. Johnson sank one at the charity stripe, 87-83 Spartans at :34.1.
Clark stole the inbounds ball and passed it to Cowels who sank the basket, 87-85 at :22.1.
With Clark, Clarke, Foster, Johnson and Cowels on the floor, Keating whistled for time with :10.4 left. Westbrook was fouled prior to the timeout and he sank both free throws coming out of the timeout, 89-85 Spartans. Foster's three hit pay-dirt, 89-88 at :3.0. It was Foster's fourth three of the game.
Timeout Spartans with :3.0 seconds remaining. Coston was fouled and sank a pair of free throws with 2.3 seconds left. Timeout Broncos.
McArthur inbounded to Foster who sank a three at the buzzer to tie it up and put the game in overtime. 91-91. It was Foster's fifth three of the game. "Kevin was going to come off a double and I would inbound it to him. It worked perfect," said McAtrthur.
The Spartans struck first in overtime and then Johnson scored, 93-93 at 3:30. Timeout Spartans.
Coston sank his fifth three of the game to put the Spartans up three, 96-93 at 2:34. Tristan Smith tossed in a pair of three throws to make the lead five at 2:10, 98-93.
Foster fouled out and the Spartans scored four straight to go up 102-93 before Cowels sank a three and a then a jumper, 104-98 Spartans.
After two Spartan free throws, Bach sank two of his own, 106-100 Spartans at :26.4. The Spartans again hit a pair of free throws, 108-100.
