Updated Broncos Stats

Spokane, WA – Holding a lead the first 19:41 of the game, Santa Clara fell 82-60 at No. 25 Gonzaga on Saturday in its second straight road game to start 2012 WCC play.  Santa Clara is 8-7 and 0-2 in the WCC and Gonzaga is 13-2 and 3-0.  Santa Clara hosts its first WCC game this season when San Diego visits on Thurs., Jan. 12 at 7 pm and then the Broncos travel to Provo, Utah when they visit BYU on Sat., Jan. 14 at 5 pm Pacific on ESPNU. Gonzaga finishes a three-game home stretch to open WCC play and are now 102-6 in WCC play at home since 1996-97.

"We had to make a quick turnaround with our late game at Portland and we knew we needed to make a quick start without their students here and establish ourselves.  We played well in the first half.  We had a bit of a lapse in our offense in the second half for that stretch and that hurt us," said Bronco head coach Kerry Keating.  "It's another lesson learned without Marc Trasolini and a young team, but we will continue to grow."

Santa Clara shot 38.3 percent from the field (23 of 60), including 31.6 percent from beyond the arc (6 of 19). They had 11 turnovers and shot 100.0 percent from the free throw line (8 of 8). They collected 26 rebounds, 13 assists, six steals and three blocks.

Individually Santa Clara was led by Raymond Cowels III who scored three threes for 13 points on the day, also leading the team with four rebounds.  Brandon Clark scored 12.  "Kevin probably needed to get to the free throw line more tonight and he needs to learn how to get there more often. With just 11 fouls called tonight that wasn't happening," added Keating.

"Gonzaga is a good team and they won't give you easy looks," said Cowels III. "Coming into the game I knew we had great guards and post players and I knew we had to get shots off quick."
