On a record night, led by Kevin Foster's 30 points, seven steals and five assists, Santa Clara was victorious at Saint Louis Wednesday night, winning 74-62, in its first game of the Edward Jones CBE Hall of Fame Classic. Foster broke Kurt Rambis' career points scored record at 16:01 in the second half and now sits at No. 1 all-time for the Broncos with 1,748 points. Rambis scored 1,735 points from 1976-80.
Santa Clara is 2-0 this season and Saint Louis is 1-1 this season. Santa Clara plays USC Upstate on Tues., Nov. 21 at 6 pm in the first of three games in four days as part of the Edward Jones CBE Hall of Fame Classic.
"We did a fantastic job on defense," said Bronco head coach Kerry Keating. "We held them to 35 percent from the floor. We did a tremendous job of getting to their shooters, not getting flustered when it didn't go our way. We turned them over 17 times. The guys showed some real maturity and some toughness tonight."
Did Keating think one thing stood out in the win? "It's something that can't be seen," added Keating. "It's something we have been working on. The coaches, the staff and the entire team have been working on. Staying in the vision, not getting too far ahead of ourselves. Playing one possession at a time. Everybody executing their role to the best of their ability. It was a great way for us to start this tournament."
Foster was 10 of 18, including 2 of 3 from beyond the arc. He also collected seven steals and five assists in 35 minutes.
"Scoring. That is what Kevin is born to do and I am glad that we have him. A record is only a record until someone breaks it. Kurt Rambis held the record for a long time (since 1980). Kurt has been a great friend of our program since he has been here and Kevin has set the bar high for someone in the future."
Marc Trasolini scored nine points with 10 rebounds. Evan Roquemore had nine points with six assists. Yannick Atanga had seven points off the bench.
"For most of the game we let Kevin go off. He was hot and we kept going to him. It was working," said Trasolini. "We played tough D and got a lot of rebounds. Our defense was as good as it's been in a long time. They are a really good team and we held them to 62 points and forced 17 turnovers."
Santa Clara shot 51.8 percent (29 of 56), including 63.6 percent from the three (7 of 11). The Broncos were 9 of 10 from the free throw line. They collected 30 rebounds, 13 assists, 11 steals and two blocks. The Broncos had 13 turnovers.
Saint Louis shot 35.3 percent (18 of 51) , including 29.4 percent from the three (5 of 17). They collected 33 rebounds, 10 assists, five steals and one block. They had 17 turnovers.
Saint Louis was led by Rob Loe, who scored 13 points. Cody Ellis added 11. Dwayne Evans had nine with eight rebounds. Jordair Jett had eight as did Mike McCall, Jr.
In the first half SLU got on the board first with a bucket by Glaze at 19:40.
Cowels III scored the Broncos first three of the night off a steal by Foster. After a Manning three, Foster scored two straight baskets inside. Glaze scored inside to tie it up 7-7.
Santa Clara went on a 12-3 run from 13:45 to 9:01. Cowels III scored inside and then Roquemore scored a two and a three to put SCU up 16-11 at 13:02. B. Clark scored a three at 12:29. Foster scored a floater at 11:30 and another one at 9:21 to put SCU up 23-14.
Manning scored SLU's first basket since 13:41 at 7:54, but Garrett responded inside at 7:18 to put SCU up 28-17. Evans hit a couple of free throws and then a jumper to cut the lead to seven at 6:14, 28-21.
Trasolini scored his first three of the year at 5:17. Roquemore went in the lane alone and scored at 4:34 to put SCU up by 12, 33-21.
Foster scored another 10-footer at 3:13. Foster hit a three and was fouled, scoring the four-point play at 2:35 to put SCU up 39-23. McArthur banked one in at 1:34 to put SCU up 41-26.
Foster's three from the elbow tied Kurt Rambis' record with 50.7 seconds left in the first half. Evans tacked on a couple of free throws to make it 44-31 with 2.2 seconds left in the first half.
In the first half, Santa Clara shot 58.1 percent (18 of 31), including 85.7 percent from the three (6 of 7). Santa Clara was 2 of 2 from the free throw line. Saint Louis shot 38.5 percent (10 of 26), including 50.0 percent from the three (3 of 6). They shot 72.7 percent from the charity stripe (8 of 11). SCU collected 16 rebounds, seven assists, seven steals, one block and seven turnovers. SLU collected 15 rebounds, six assists, three steals and 10 turnovers.
Atanga scored inside at 19:10 to start the scoring in the second half, putting SCU up by 15, 46-31.
Foster scored a bucket off his own steal to break Rambis' all-time leading scorer record at 16:01. He was fouled and made the free throw as well to put the Broncos up by 19.
Trasolini and Roquemore scored on floaters to put SCU up 60-41 at 11:28. Foster knocked down a pair of free throws at 10:50 and then a pair of jumpers to score his 26th point of the night.
Jett fouled out at 7:20 with Foster shooting a three. He made two.
McArthur's 10 footer from the corner put SCU up by 20 again, 70-50 at 6:35. He fouled out 10 seconds later with six points.
Loe hit one from way out, collecting his third three at 5:45.
Roquemore tossed a dandy bullet to Trasolini who dunked it at 4:51.
McCall scored inside to cut the lead to 14, 72-58 Broncos at 3:02.
Saint Louis scored four straight before Foster hit a pair of free throws to give him 30 points on the night with 43 seconds left to put SCU up 74-62.
