Santa Clara - Pacific Game Notes

Santa Clara (7-2) travels to Stockton to play at former and future West Coast Conference member Pacific (5-4) on Sat., Dec. 15 for a 5 pm contest.  The Broncos and Tigers will battle for the 130th time, the most games SCU has played against a school not currently a member of the WCC.  The home team has won six of the past seven games in the matchup. 

The Tigers will join the West Coast Conference next year as the league's newest member.  The Tigers have already faced three WCC teams this season, posting a 2-1 record (won vs. Saint Mary's and at USF and lost at Gonzaga).  It will play Saint Mary's for the second time this season on Dec. 19. UOP Head Coach Bob Thomason is 417-312 in his 25th and final season as the head coach of his alma mater.  He announced his retirement effective at the end of the 2012-13.  Thomason is the Big West all-time wins leader, surpassing Jerry Tarkanian after the 65-57 victory over Utah State on Dec. 3.

The Broncos have three players averaging double figures including Kevin Foster (20.1), Marc Trasolini (14.2) and Evan Roquemore (12.8).

The Broncos improved to 7-2 on Tuesday with a 75-54 win at San Jose State to continue their mastery over the Spartans.  Its their best nine-game start to a season under head coach Kerry Keating and their best start since posting the same record through nine games in 1997-98. SCU never trailed in posting its third straight win and ninth in the last 11 meetings against San Jose State. Evan Roquemore led three players in double figures with 16 points, Raymond Cowels III added 13 and Kevin Foster scored eight second-half points to reach double digits for the 90th time in his career with 11. SCU held San Jose State to 25% shooting from the field (15 of 60) and forced 18 turnovers in winning on the Spartans home court for the 10th straight time. Since 1980, Santa Clara has played San Jose State 31 times and Santa Clara has won 21 of those meetings.  Santa Clara has won nine of the last 11 meetings vs. the Spartans, including the last four of five games.

  The Broncos are just 2.4 seconds away from being undefeated this season. During their two losses, which came in consecutive games, they allowed a late 3-point basket in each and lost both in overtime. Utah State's Preston Medlin hit a game-tying three with 2.4 seconds left in regulation to send the game into OT and the Aggies handed Santa Clara its first loss of the season, 80-78, on Nov. 28. The Broncos endured a similar fate against UC Santa Barbara on Dec. 1, when Kyle Boswell hit a contested three at the regulation buzzer to tie the game, 71-71. Trailing, 83-80, with 7 seconds left in OT, Kevin Foster was fouled before attempting a potential game-tying shot. Foster missed both free throw attempts and the Broncos dropped their second straight.

Us vs. Them

Santa Clara leads the all-time series 88-41 vs. Pacific. Santa Clara is 7-7 vs. the Tigers dating back to 1999-00. The last eight contests resulted in four wins for the Broncos and four wins for the Tigers, with Santa Clara winning 78-76 in overtime on Dec. 17, 2011 in the Leavey Center.  Santa Clara lost in the Spanos Center in its last visit (69-59 on Dec. 14, 2010).  

UOP has won three straight games over the Broncos on its home court. SCU last won at Pacific on Dec. 9, 2006, a 67-49 decision. The teams have split their last 18 decisions dating back to Dec. 1995. Pacific, along with SCU, was an original member of what is now the WCC, joining in 1952-53 to form the California Basketball Association. UOP left the conference in 1971, but has accepted an invitation back to the WCC beginning on July 1, 2013.

Defending His Honors

For the second straight game, Santa Clara will play at a team that has their conference's Player of the Week. On Tuesday at San Jose State, James Kinney had been named the WAC Player of the Week and showed his skills vs. the Broncos when he scored 19 points, including four threes.

Pacific junior Ross Rivera was selected as Big West Conference Player of the Week on Monday, Dec. 10. It is Rivera's first weekly award.  For the week he averaged 15.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.  Ross led the Tigers to a pair of victories last week, coming off the bench in both games after starting the first seven. He shot 63.2% from the field, hitting 12 of 19 shots. Rivera scored a season-high 17 points against USF on Dec. 8, pulling down six rebounds. He scored the 17 points in just 15 minutes against USF. With USF leading 37-29, he scored nine points in a 13-2 run that gave the Tigers their first lead of the game (42-39) with 11:55 to play. He also scored a basket with :27 left that gave the Tigers a 65-59 lead to help secure the victory. He scored nine points in the first half against Nevada on Dec. 4, finishing with 14 points. 

Big Rob

Since being inserted into the starting lineup, 7-foot sophomore Robert Garrett has proved he belongs. In his first start of the season, and second of his career, Garrett pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds against Pacific Union on Dec. 8 while adding nine points on 4 of 5 shooting from the field with 2 blocked shots in a career-high tying 21 minutes. Making consecutive starts for the first time, he scored eight points with four blocks at San Jose State on Dec. 11. In the two games Garrett is 7-of-10 from the field with 17 points and six blocks.

What's Your Point?

SCU has scored at least 74 points in every game this season and ranks 12th nationally (through games of 12/11) with an average of 82.1 ppg. The average is bolstered by the team's scoring output in a season opening 106-66 win over Simpson College on Nov. 10. The point total in that game tied for the 13th highest in SCU history and was the first 100-point game since scoring 101 against Pepperdine on Jan 21, 2008. The Broncos also tallied 89 against Eastern Washington (Nov. 23), 85 against USC Upstate (Nov. 20) and 80 against UCSB (Dec. 1) giving them four 80+ point games for the season. They scored 80 or more points in a game just three times during the 2011-12 season and have not averaged more than 80 points a game for an entire season since 1979-80.

Foster Named Player of the Month 

Kevin Foster was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Month for November 2012. Foster averaged 21.7 points per game in leading SCU to a 5-1 month, its best start since 1968. Foster connected on 46.9% of his field goal attempts, 40% from beyond the three-point arc (20-for-50), and 86% from the free throw line. In addition, Foster averaged 4.2 steals -- tops in the nation last month -- and 4.2 assists per contest.  He scored 21+ points four times last month.

Foster passed Kurt Rambis to become Santa Clara's all-time leading scorer with 1,849 points in the Broncos 74-63 win at Saint Louis on Nov. 14 when he scored 30 points.  In addition to being the school's all-time leading scorer, he is also No. 1 in field goal attempts, threes attempted and threes made.  He is No. 2 in career threes made in the West Coast Conference as well.

Minutes 

Marc Trasolini, Kevin Foster and Evan Roquemore have started all nine games for the Broncos and have combined for 240 starts in their Santa Clara careers. Each of the three is also averaging over 28.4 minutes a contest this season. The trio has produced by accounting for 57.7% of the team's point production while combining to shoot 50.3% from the field. Foster (181), Trasolini (128) and Roquemore (118) have scored 427 of the team's 739 points. 

Moving On Up 

Kevin Foster has reached double figures in scoring eight times in nine games and has topped the 20-point mark five times to lead the Broncos in scoring with a 20.1 ppg average. Foster scored his 1,800th career point, on, what else, a 3-point basket against Utah State on Nov. 28. He was also fouled on the play and converted his second 4-point play of the season. Since the start of the 2012-13 season, Foster has become the school's career points leader, overtaking 1980 WCC Player of the Year Kurt Rambis, and moved up to 12th on the WCC career scoring chart with 1,872 points. Foster scored 11 points at SJSU on Dec. 11 to move past Gonzaga's Adam Morrison (1,867) on the WCC list and needs just six points to crack the WCCs top 10. It's unlikely he will catch LMU's Hank Gathers (1987-90) for the league's top spot (2,490), but Foster could crack the top five and at his current pace for an entire season take the No. 2 overall spot, currently held by LMU's Terrell Lowery (2,201). Foster scored 8 second half points at SJSU to reach double figures in scoring for the 90th time in his career.

After becoming just the third player in WCC history to make over 300 3-point shots in a career, Foster has his sights set on the league's all-time record. Foster sank four 3s against Pacific Union on Dec. 8 giving him 339 for his career to move ahead of Portland's Jared Stohl (336) into 2nd all-time on the WCC list. LMU's Jeff Fryer (1987-90) holds the WCC mark with 363 career made 3-pointers. Foster reached 340 when he made 1-of-5 3-point shots at SJSU (Dec. 11). He has made at least one 3-point basket in every game this season and in 98 of his 104 career games played. Foster has made five or more 3s in a game 24 times. With 926 career 3-point shot attempts, Foster trails Fryer (940) by 14 for the league's career lead in that category.

Assisting His Teammates

Evan Roquemore has tallied a team-best 59 assists and is tied for 14th nationally with 6.6 per game (Dec. 11). Roquemore has handed out five or more assists in each of the last eight games and totaled a season-high 10, one shy of his career-best, against Pacific Union on Dec. 8. Roquemore, who currently has 356 career assists, moved into No. 8 on the school's career list, passing Harold Keeling who amassed 344 assists from 1981-1985. At his current pace for the entire season, Roquemore has a shot at breaking John Woolery's 1993-94 single season record of 190 and could also become the fourth Bronco with 500 career assists by the end of his junior season. E-Rock has been scoring the basketball as well. In a win at San Jose State on Dec. 11, he scored a team-high 16 points and now needs just 21 to become the 30th Santa Clara player to score 1,000 in his career. 

Microwave

After becoming just the third player in West Coast conference history to make over 300 3-point shots in a career, Kevin Foster has his sights set on the league's all-time record. Foster currently has 340 career made 3's, good enough for No. 2 on the WCC all-time list. He needs 24 threes to break the WCC record set by Jeff Fryer from 1987-90.  He topped Steve Nash's school record of 263 threes (1992-96) early last season.  

In Santa Clara's 88-75 win over Air Force on March 18, 2010, Foster broke the school record with nine threes, tying a career-high with 36 points.  He also had a career-high 36 in Santa Clara's 85-71 win over Gonzaga on Jan. 20, 2011.  Foster shattered the WCC single season threes made record with 140 in 2010-11 and grabbed the country's top spot in threes made per game as well with 3.68.  His 768 points that season were No. 6 on the WCC's single season points scored list as he finished as the leading scorer in a single season in the Bay Area as well.  He broke the school's single season mark for points scored, minutes played, threes made and threes attempted.  Foster was named first-team All-WCC and was named the WCC Player of the Month for February and March.  He was named the WCC Player of the Year by CollegeInsider.com.

Foster was nicknamed 'Microwave' by his father during his youth after the Detroit Piston's Vinnie Johnson.  Johnson earned the nickname 'the Microwave' from Celtics guard Danny Ainge for his ability to score many points in a short period of time, heating up the offense. Foster has scored 15+ points in 69 of 104 career games and he has scored 19+ in 49 career games.  Foster's 19+ games follow:
