SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara athletic department was fortunate enough to welcome legendary college basketball coach Don Meyer when he visited the Mission Campus and spoke to coaches and administrators the past couple of days.
Meyer was the long-time coach at Hamline, Lipscomb and then at Northern State. He held the record for most all-time wins until 2011 when Duke head coach Mike Kryzewski surpassed Meyer's mark. He holds a career record of 923-324 during his 30-plus years as a head coach.
The well-renowned coach was in a car crash in 2008 that resulted in the loss of his leg. Not too long after, doctors found inoperable cancer. Meyer continued to coach at Northern State until 2010 when he retired. He is now a Regents Distinguished Professor at Northern State, as well as a motivational speaker.
Meyer has a connection to the Santa Clara family, as Kyle Schwan, the Santa Clara director of operations for men's basketball, played for Meyer at Northern State.
The long-time coach spent couple days on the Mission campus and watched practice before sitting down with Santa Clara guard and EYEBRONCO reporter, Denzel Johnson, to talk about his experiences on Tuesday night.
The following day, Meyer sat down with many Santa Clara coaches and members of the administration to talk about different principles in coaching and his experiences.
