With the Broncos Marc Trasolini scoring 23 with eight rebounds and Evan Roquemore and Kevin Foster adding 18 and 15, respectively, Santa Clara won its fourth straight with a 64-50 victory at San Diego in Saturday's WCC Game of the Week.
Santa Clara is 16-6 and 4-3 in the WCC. San Diego is 11-11 and 4-3 in the WCC. San Diego is now 8-3 at home this year. The Broncos return home to host Portland on Thurs., Jan. 31 at 7 pm.
"We talked about it in the beginning - that the games are always close here. We didn't shoot the ball well in the first half, but did in the second half. But in the first half we got deflections, got consecutive defensive shots and ran the floor well," said Bronco head coach Kerry Keating. "Ray did a great job on Chris Anderson."
Santa Clara shot 58 percent in the second half and was 14 of 16 from the free throw line as well. "Marc did a really good job - he has been really aggressive in practice. He has turned it up in these last few WCC games," said Trasolini. "It's a carry over in games. With Marc, Kevin and Evan getting to the free throw, it really helped us. We weren't able to outrebound them, but I am happy we only turned it over 10 times against their defensive pressure."
Santa Clara was led by Trasolini's 23 points, on 10 of 15 shooting. He added eight rebounds and three blocks. His three blocks move him to No. 2 in career blocks, passing Nick Vanos (159, 1981-85) in career blocks with 161. He also moved to No. 11 in career points, passing Bud Ogden and Mike Stewart in the game.
Foster added 15 with a perfect 8 of 8 from the free throw line. He scored five assists and a steal. With 15 points, he passed Bill Cartwright (2116 points, 1975-79) to move to No. 3 all-time in WCC history with 2,118 points. He is also No. 3 all-time in the Bay Area.
Roquemore scored 18, including 4 of 4 from the free throw line, with two steals and an assist. Yannick Atanga grabbed nine rebounds.
Ken Racifer led USD with 14. Johnny Dee scored just nine and added five rebounds.
Santa Clara shot 42.0 percent from the field (21 of 50), including 26.7 percent from beyond the arc (4 of 15). They shot 85.7 percent from the free throw line (18 of 21). The Broncos collected 30 rebounds, nine assists, nine steals, eight blocks, and 10 turnovers.
San Diego shot 37.5 percent from the field (18 of 48), including 25.0 percent from beyond the arc (5 of 20). They shot 50.0 percent from the free throw line (9 of 18). The Toreros collected 33 rebounds, four assists, three steals, five blocks, and 17 turnovers.
Dee scored an and one at 19:36 and Trasolini responded inside at 19:19 to start the game. After Kramer's basket at 18:20, Trasolini drove the lane for two at 18:23.
At 17:26 Roquemore scored a triple and Anderson danced through defenders 10 seconds later for a basket to tie it up 7-7. Manresa scored from five feet out at 13:29. B. Clark was fouled shooting a three and he sank two of three from the free throw line. USD scored two straight buckets to take a 13-9 lead at 10:28.
J. Clarke scored a missle three from the side at 8:39. Ken Rancifer scored a pair of free throws at 7:49 and then a basket at 6:39. Roquemore hit a couple of free throws at 5:41 and Trasolini dumped it in at 5:11 to pull the Broncos within one, 17-16 USD.
A 91.2 percent free throw shooter, Dee was one of two from the free throw line at 4:05. Foster gave the Broncos a 19-18 lead with his first three of the day. He was 0-4 prior to hitting the bucket at 3:49.
Trasolini kept the 9-1 run going with a bucket inside with time winding down at 2:51. Miles stopped the run at 2:24 – the team's first basket in more than four minutes. Trasolini scored back-to-back baskets for the Broncos at 2:10 and 1:03, 25-20 Broncos. He moved to No. 12 on the all-time list, passing Bud Ogden (1,437 points, 1966-69).
Rancifer scored a three with 41 seconds left.
Roquemore's bucket with two seconds left in the first half made it 27-23 at halftime. Trasolini scored 12 in the first half with four boards. Roqeumore added seven. Atanga had six boards for the Broncos. Rancifer led USD with seven points.
In the first half Santa Clara shot 32.3 percent from the field (10 of 31), including 27.3 percent from beyond the arc (3 of 11). They shot 80.0 percent from the free throw line (4 of 5). The Broncos collected 14 rebounds, four assists, six steals, one block and had two turnovers.
San Diego shot 47.4 percent from the field (9 of 19), including 25.0 percent from beyond the arc (1 of 4). They shot 57.1 percent from the free throw line (4 of 7). The Toreros collected 19 rebounds, two assists, no steals, four blocks and had 11 turnovers.
Trasolini scored one of two from the free throw line to start the second half at 19:50. Anderson scored inside at 19:17. Trasolini danced through the lane for a dunk at 18:34, 30-25 Broncos.
Rancifer's three off a USD steal at 17:33 made it 30-29 Broncos.
The Broncos then went on a 6-0 run. Roquemore finger-rolled it for two at 17:00. Atanga dumped it in at 16:47. Foster's pair of free throws at 16:01 made it 36-29.
The Broncos went on a 19-3 run with USD scoring just free throws from 13:28-4:37. Trasolini stole the ball and on a dandy pass from Foster, Roqeumore dunked it at 14:40 and then scored inside again at 13:07.
Trasolini scored a pair of free throws at 12:22. Roquemore's triple at 10:16 gave the Broncos a 45-31 lead. Anderson scored a couple free throws at 10:03.
Trasolini's six-footer at 8:43 moved him to No. 11 all-time on the Bronco scoring list, passing Mike Stewart (1,446 points, 1970-73). Foster laid it in at 7:57 and then 7:17 to push the Bronco lead to 51-33. Trasolini dunked it at 6:12 and then 5:12 for his 21st point of the day, 55-34.
Foster's pair of free throws gave him 11 on the day, 56-34 Broncos. USD scored back-to-back baskets to give them 38 at 4:12. Foster scored another pair of free throws at 4:01.
Dee's three with 2:18 made it 59-47 as USD went on a 9-0 run.
Foster's two free throws made it 61-47 as he passed Bill Cartwright to move to No. 3 all-time in WCC history (2,116 points, 1975-79).
