Riding a two-game winning streak, the Broncos (19-8, 7-5) embark on their final extended road trip of the regular season when they visit No. 3 Gonzaga (25-2, 12-0) on Wed., Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. (PST). The trip concludes on Sat., Feb. 23 with a 2 pm game at Portland on Time Warner Cable.
The Gonzaga game will be televised nationally on ESPNU with Roxy Bernstein and Miles Simon making the action. The game can also be heard live on KDOW 1220 AM with the broadcast beginning at 8 p.m. Anthony Passarelli is in his sixth season as the Broncos' play-by-play announcer.
Santa Clara solidified its standing in the No. 4 spot in the West Coast Conference standings by winning both games at home last week. The Broncos leapfrogged San Diego into fourth place with a 61-52 win on Feb. 14 and then moved one game ahead of the Toreros with a 70-60 win over Pepperdine on Feb. 16. Raymond Cowels III scored his 1,000th career point, Kevin Foster scored 22 and Brandon Clark added 15 off the bench in the win over Pepperdine. The Broncos never trailed, scoring the game's first seven points, and led by as many as 17 in completing the regular season series sweep of the Waves. Cowels III hit a 3-pointer, his only one of the game, 3:40 into the second half to become the fourth member of the current roster and 31st player in school history, to reach the 1,000-point plateau.
With four conference games remaining, the Broncos are one game ahead of USD for the No. 4 position and hold the tie-breaker after winning both games against the Toreros this year. Finishing top four is important because the third and fourth place finishers receive a bye into the quarterfinal round of the WCC Tournament, which takes place in Las Vegas on March 6-11. The Broncos trail BYU by 1.5 games in the league standings for the No. 3 position.
SCU is looking to win in Spokane for the second time in seven years, but have a difficult chore ahead. Santa Clara's last win in Spokane was an 84-73 decision on Feb. 12, 2007. Ranked then-No. 10, the Bulldogs defeated SCU on Jan. 5, 81-76, in front of a Leavey Center record 4,900 fans. The now-No. 3 Zags have won the last four series meetings. Gonzaga has also won five straight at The Kennel by outscoring the Broncos by an average of 87.6 to 58.8.
The Broncos will battle a top 10 team for the third time this season, having lost earlier to then-No. 1 Duke on Dec. 29 and then-No. 10 Gonzaga on Jan. 5. Santa Clara is 9-52 all-time against top 10 teams. Its last win over an AP top 10 team was on Nov. 19, 2004, a 77-66 win over then-No. 4 North Carolina, the highest ranked opponent Santa Clara has ever defeated. The Tarheels went on to win the NCAA title that year.
Better
With 19 wins this season, the Broncos have amassed their second-highest victory total in head coach Kerry Keating's six seasons and have the third-most wins in the program's last 12 seasons. The Broncos continue to be one of the top scoring teams in the country coming in to this week at No. 13 among 345 ranked Division I schools with 2,035 points scored. They reached the 70-point mark in a game for the 21st time this season in their win over Pepperdine and are closing in on the school record of 25 70+ point games which was established during the 1976-77 season. The top four teams in the WCC all rank among the top 13 nationally in total points with Gonzaga and BYU tied for No. 4 (2,114) and Saint Mary's at No. 7 (2,066). Santa Clara has not gone an entire season without scoring fewer than 60 points in at least one game since 1980-81 when its lowest point total in a game was 63.
After going winless (0-16) in WCC games last season, the Broncos are experiencing one of the finest turnarounds in league history in 2012-13. Santa Clara's 7-game improvement so far this season ties for the fourth-best in WCC history, matching Saint Mary's (1956), Pacific (1964), LMU (1986) and San Diego (1990), who all won seven more conference games than the previous season. LMU holds the top two single-season turnarounds in league history going from 0-14 in 1987 to 10-4 in 1988 (+10) and from 2-12 in 2011 to 11-5 in 2012 (+9). Pepperdine had an eight-game improvement from the previous season in both 1979 and '82.
Playing together for three full seasons, fifth-year seniors Marc Trasolini and Kevin Foster have combined for 59 victories. Add in the four wins from Foster's sophomore year before he broke his foot in the win at UC Santa Barbara on Dec. 1, 2009 and the duo has won 63 games together during their time on the court (Foster played in six games in 2009-10 before being redshirted due to a broken foot that ended his season and Trasolini was redshirted due to a pre-season torn ACL in 2011-12).
All of Foster's scoring exploits have been chronicled, but the senior from Katy, Texas, may well go down as one of the greatest all-around players to ever compete in the West Coast Conference. One of just four players to score over 2,100 career points, Foster leads the WCC and ranks 15th nationally this season with 2.41 steals per game and he is No. 6 in the WCC with 4.4 assists a game. Through his career Foster has amassed 2,187 points, 419 assists and 207 steals joining LMU's Terrell Lowery as the only players in WCC history to accumulate more than 2,000 points, 400 assists and 200 steals. From 1988-92 Lowery recorded 2,201 points, 689 assists and 231 steals.
Zags
This will be the 80th all-time meeting between Santa Clara and Gonzaga with the Bulldogs holding a 48-31 lead and riding a four-game series win streak. The Zags won the first meeting this season, 81-74, on Jan. 5 behind a career-game from Kelly Olynyk as the junior from Kamloops, B.C. scored a career-high 33 points and tied a career-best with 10 rebounds. SCU's last win over the Zags came on Jan. 20, 2011 with an 85-71 decision in the Leavey Center. That win broke a 10-game home losing skid to Gonzaga. The Bulldogs have won 26 of the 34 games played in Spokane. Gonzaga has won five straight on its home floor and 15 of 16 while scoring at least 80 points in each of its last 10 wins.
Marc Trasolini had career-highs with 5 blocks and 4 3-pointers made vs. GU (1/28/10) … Evan Roquemore has 15 games with 8 or more assists in his career and two have come vs. Gonzaga (1/7/12 and 2/17/11) … Denzel Johnson had a career-best 5 assists vs. GU (2/16/12) … Kevin Foster set a career-high with 36 points vs. GU (1/20/11) and has four of his 50 career 20+ point games against the Zags … Foster has made 18 consecutive free throws against GU and is 27-of-30 from the stripe in seven career games … Raymond Cowels III matched his career-best with 4 steals vs. Gonzaga (2/16/12) … In three career games covering 40 minutes against GU, Robert Garrett has committed 10 personal fouls without scoring a point.
Four In This Club
There have been 31 players in the history of SCU basketball to score 1,000 career points and four of them are on the current Bronco roster. SCU was the first Division I school with three 1,000 point scorers on its roster back on Dec. 15, 2012 when Evan Roquemore scored his 1000th career point; and Santa Clara is now the third school in Division I this season to have four active 1,000 career point scorers after Raymond Cowels III (1,001) joined the club in the win over Pepperdine. Two other teams nationally with a quartet of 1,000 point scorers: N.C. State accomplished the feat on Jan. 22, 2013 vs. Wake Forest and Davidson matched them on Feb. 9, 2013 vs. App. State. (note: Indiana accomplished this as well on Tues., Feb. 19 vs. Michigan State so there are now four schools).
The other three Broncos are averaging double figures. Kevin Foster (18.4 ppg, 2,187 career points), Marc Trasolini (15.4 ppg, 1,528) and Evan Roquemore (12.5 ppg, 1,198) are the only three teammates to place among the WCC's top 14 scorers. Foster is No. 2 nationally in active career points scored behind Lehigh's C.J. McCollum (2,361) who is out for the season with a broken foot.
Foster (2,187) became SCU's all-time scoring leader, surpassing 1980 West Coast Conference Player of the Year and former NBA star Kurt Rambis, in a win at St. Louis on Nov. 14 and became the fourth player in WCC history to score 2,100 career points vs. CSU Bakersfield on Jan. 23. Not even ranked in the top 25 career scorers in WCC history when the season began, Foster currently sits at No. 3 after passing Bill Cartwright (2,116) with his 15-point effort at San Diego on Jan. 26 and needs 15 points to move past LMU's Terrell Lowery, who scored 2,201 from 1988-92, for the No. 2 spot. Foster has 23 double-digit scoring games this season and 105 in his 122 game career.
Marc Trasolini became the 11th Bronco to score 1,500 career points when he tallied 13 vs. Saint Mary's on Feb. 7. With 1,528 career points Trasolini is 43 behind Kyle Bailey for the No. 10 spot. Bailey scored 1,571 points from 2001-05. Trasolini scored 23 points at San Diego on Jan. 26 moving ahead of Bud Ogden (1,437) and Mike Stewart (1,446) into 11th on the school's career list.
Evan Roquemore joined the 1,000-point club this season, reaching the plateau in a win at Pacific on Dec. 15. He scored his 1,100th career point at LMU on Jan. 10, becoming just the 25th player in school history to score that many. His 18 points vs. Saint Mary's on Feb. 7 helped him move past Nathan Fast (1996-00, 1,182) into the 23rd spot with 1,184 points. He needs two points to be the 23rd Bronco player to score 1,200 career points.
Raymond Cowels III has played in all but one game during his four-year career (family funeral) and has started 57 straight times since the beginning of the 2011-12 season. RC3 is fourth on the team in scoring with 9.9 ppg and became the fourth member of the current roster to score 1,000 career points and the 31st in school history when he scored eight on Feb. 16 vs. Pepperdine. He scored his 1,001th point on a three, his only three of the game, going 1-9 from beyond the arc vs. the Waves.
Us
The Broncos are 16-2 this season when leading at halftime and have won their last six games when holding an advantage at the break. They have outscored their opponents 983 to 800 in the first 20 minutes … Santa Clara tops the WCC with 136 blocked shots and has three of the top nine shot blockers in the league. Marc Trasolini is No. 2 with 46, Robert Garrett at No. 3 with 40 and Yannick Atanga is tied for No. 8 with 24 … Santa Clara and BYU are the only WCC schools to score at least 60 points in every game this season … Kevin Foster is averaging 14.6 ppg and has made just 13-of-43 field goal attempts (30.2%) in his three games played in Spokane … Foster has scored over 100 points against every WCC team except BYU (62) and Pepperdine (99). He's scored 146 points in seven career games against Gonzaga … SCU has three winning streaks of five or more games this season … Brandon Clark is the only non-starter to have more than one double-digit scoring game off the bench. Clark has scored 10 or more points eight times this season … SCU has held opponents to fewer than 20 first half points five times this season … Kevin Foster is the only SCU player to attempt more than 200 three-point shots in a season. He's done it for a third time this season with 235 … John McArthur has more personal fouls (63) than points scored (43) playing in all 27 games this season … The Broncos have turned the ball over just nine times in each of their last three games.
Traz Tops
Marc Trasolini is on a bit of a hot streak for the Broncos. Over the last eight games Trasolini has scored 131 points (16.4 ppg) while shooting 58.9 percent from the field (56-of-95). Trasolini saw his career-best streak of double-figure scoring games come to an end at seven on Feb. 16 when he scored eight points on 4-of-8 shooting in a win over Pepperdine. Trasolini scored 19 points against Gonzaga on Jan. 5, the most he's scored against the Zags in eight career games, making half of his field goal attempts (7-of-14) with nine rebounds. Trasolini is all over the WCC stat sheets coming in at No. 1 in offensive rebounds (3.0), No. 2 In blocked shots (1.7), No. 3 in rebounding (8.1), No. 4 in FG percentage (54.6) and No. 7 in scoring (15.4).
Trasolini has also been named as one of the 10 finalist's for the Senior CLASS Award. The men's Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Final Four. Nationwide fan voting has begun and Bronco fans are encouraged to vote for Trasolini every day at the following website through March 25 - www.seniorclassaward.com/vote.
To be eligible for the award, the senior must have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 candidates announced in October.
Trasolini is the only player in the WCC and Pac 12 to be named to the CoSIDA All-District Academic All-American list three straight competition years this Feb. (2010, '11, '13). Trasolini carries a 3.56 GPA in his fourth quarter of MBA work and graduated cum laude in March 2012 with a degree in Finance (3.65 GPA).
Bronco head coach Kerry Keating had this to say about Trasolini in the community. "On our annual trip to the Great America park to spend the day with Courageous Kids (kids with cancer) Marc has been front and center each year. At 6-9 240, he is easily visible, but the kids feel his heart when he spends time with them because he is a good person, not because he is a basketball player and tall. Marc has been a fixture at our annual summer camp and relishes his role as teacher and role model, and has developed a comfort in being easily noticeable but has more so developed strength in being a role model and good citizen."
First On The Floor
Marc Trasolini (98), Raymond Cowels III (77) and Kevin Foster (114) have started all 27 games for SCU this season and have combined for 289 starts in their Santa Clara careers. Evan Roquemore has started 26 of 27 games and has 81 career starts under his belt. The remaining nine players on the roster have a total of 121 career starts with Niyi Harrison leading the group with 44. Foster became the sixth Bronco to start 100 career games when SCU defeated Wagner for the Cable Car Classic title on Dec. 22 and his 114 starts are second-most in school history. With three more starts he will break the school record of 116 set by Brian Jones from 1996-01. Cowels III and Trasolini have played in the third-most games played in school history with each playing in 125 career games. Ben Dowdell (2007-11) is the all-time leader having played in 128 career games.
Heart of Indiana
Sophomore Brandon Clark has emerged as the top backcourt option off the bench for the Broncos. Over the last five games Clark has averaged just over 20 minutes of court time, contributing 57 points on 17-of-35 shooting (48.6%) with 11 assists. Clark scored 15 points in the win over Pepperdine on Feb. 16, dropping in a career-best seven free throws in 10 tries. He also hit 4-of-7 from the field with three assists and no turnovers. Against San Diego on Feb. 14, Clark and four other reserves provided a spark with a 14-6 run midway through the second half turning a 3-point deficit into a 5-point lead in just under six minutes of play. Clark scored six of the 14 points during that run. He has reached double-figures in scoring four times in the last five games and is the only non-starter to have more than one double-digit scoring game on the season.
Cameroon's Main Man
Over the last six games sophomore Yannick Atanga has been a force in the middle for Santa Clara. Atanga recorded a season-high and career-high tying four blocked shots in the win over Pepperdine on Feb. 16 and has multiple blocks five times totaling 13 swats. Through his first 21 games he totaled 11 blocks and had just three multiple-block games. Atanga has 24 blocked shots for the season placing him third on the team and tied for eighth in WCC. He's been working the boards as well during the six-game stretch totaling 51 caroms (8.5 rpg), including a career-high tying 13 against Portland on Jan. 31. Atanga has been efficient on the boards in conference-only games hauling down 93 of his 161 rebounds against WCC opponents, good for a third-place tie with Gonzaga's Elias Harris at 7.8 per game. Overall Atanga ranks No. 9 in the WCC with 6.0 boards a game.
Heating Up The Microwave
Kevin Foster was nicknamed 'Microwave' by his father Rick Foster during his youth after the Detroit Piston's Vinnie Johnson. Johnson earned the nickname 'the Microwave' from Celtics guard Danny Ainge for his ability to score many points in a short period of time, heating up the offense. Foster has scored 15+ points in 80 of 122 career games and he has scored 19+ in 57 career games. Foster's 19+ games follow:

Climbing the Three-Point Ladder
Kevin Foster is the WCC's career leader with 392 after breaking a tie with LMU's Jeff Fryer vs. BYU). Foster hit his 364th career 3 knocking down a shot from the corner with 10:44 left in the first half vs. BYU on Jan. 12 for the record. Foster sits in 13th place on the NCAA Division I all-time threes made list with 392 with one more tying him for 12th place all-time. He is eight away from becoming the 11th player in Division I to make 400 career threes. Foster's 140 made threes in WCC games is No. 4 all-time in league history. Sitting at No. 3 on the WCC list is Gonzaga's Blake Stepp with 143 threes made in WCC games (2000-04). LMU's Jeff Fryer holds the WCC record in league-only games with 166 threes made in 49 games (1987-90). His three threes at BYU Feb. 2 broke two-time NBA MVP and former Bronco Steve Nash's school record. Nash made 132 in his 56 league games and is No. 2 all-time for the Broncos with 263 threes, a record Foster eclipsed early his junior year.
With 1,084 attempted, Foster is the SCU and WCC leader and he ranks No. 7 in NCAA Division I history. He needs 109 attempts to break the all-time NCAA record set by Keydren Clark in 2006 (1,192, Saint Peter's). Foster has attempted 10 or more 3s in a game 11 times this season and 55 times in his 122 game career.

For the second time this season, Foster was the WCC Player of the Week, earning the honor on Jan. 21 after he averaged 27.5 ppg, including 57.1 percent from beyond the arc (12-of-21), in a pair of road wins at USF, winning 85-54, and 83-76 at Pepperdine. Foster averaged 33 minutes per game hitting six threes in both victories. He also shot 62.5 percent for the week (20-of-32) and recorded his first career double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds at USF. On the week he averaged 6.0 rpg, 3.0, apg and 2.5 spg.
In SCU's 88-75 win over Air Force on March 18, 2011, Foster broke the school record with nine threes, tying a career-high with 36 points. He also had a career-high 36 in Santa Clara's 85-71 win over Gonzaga on Jan. 20, 2011. Foster shattered the WCC single season threes made record with 140 in 2010-11, leading the country, and grabbed the nation's top spot in threes made per game as well with 3.68.
Foster's 768 points in 2010-11 were No. 6 on the WCC's single season points scored list as he finished as the leading scorer in a single season in the Bay Area as well. He broke the school's single season mark for points scored, minutes played, threes made and threes attempted that year. He was named first-team All-WCC and was named the WCC Player of the Month in February and March. He was named the WCC Player of the Year by CollegeInsider.com.
Dishes
A 2013 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award nominee, Evan Roquemore is one of the top assist men in the WCC. Roquemore has at least five assists in 21 of the team's 27 games ranking No. 2 in the WCC. He is also second on the team in minutes played with 853.
During SCU's Jan. 10 game at LMU, Roquemore scored his 1,100th career point and collected his 400th career assist joining Brian Jones, Steve Nash, Kyle Bailey and Kevin Foster as the only Broncos to amass that many points and assists over a career. He produced his first double-double game of the season, and third career, with 16 points and a career-high 10 rebounds in the Cable Car Classic title game win over Wagner on Dec. 22.
Roquemore has 155 assists for the season and has a chance to break John Woolery's 1993-94 single season school record of 190. With 452 career assists, Roquemore has an outside chance of becoming the fourth Bronco with 500 by the time his junior season ends. He is tied with Kyle Bailey (2001-05) at No. 5 on the school's all-time assist list. He needs 31 to pass Eddie Joe Chavez (1974-78), who collected 482 assists in his time with the Broncos.
Golden Gate Bridge
With 15 points in a win at San Diego on Jan. 26, Kevin Foster passed former USF great Bill Cartwright for No. 3 on the WCC and Bay Area career scoring list. Foster, who has scored 2,187 career points, is chasing Terrell Lowery for the No. 2 spot on the WCC chart, needing 15 points to overtake the former LMU standout, who scored 2,201 points from 1988-92. To pass No. 1 all-time – LMU's Hank Gathers (1987-90) for the WCC's top spot (2,490) – Foster would need to score 304 points. Foster became SCU's career points leader, overtaking 1980 WCC Player of the Year Kurt Rambis, in a 74-62 win at St. Louis on Nov. 14.
Foster has reached double figures 23 times in 27 games this season, has topped the 20-point mark 13 times, and scored at least 30 in a game twice to lead the Broncos in scoring. He is just the fourth player to score 2,100 points in WCC history. Foster became the seventh player in West Coast Conference history to score 2,000 career points, reaching that mark on a runner in the lane early in the second half vs. Gonzaga on Jan. 5. He scored his 1,900th career point on a 3-point basket at Pacific on Dec. 15 and added career point No. 1,800 on a three-pointer against Utah State on Nov. 28.
Against No. 10 Gonzaga on Jan. 5, he became the fourth player in Bay Area Division I history (includes Cal, Stanford, Santa Clara, Saint Mary's, USF and San Jose State), and the first in 21 years, to score 2,000 career points, joining Stanford's Todd Lichti (2,336) and Adam Keefe (2,319) and USF's Bill Cartwright (2,116).
