The Broncos (19-9, 7-6) look to rebound when they visit Portland (11-18, 4-10) for an afternoon contest at the Chiles Center on Sat., Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. The game will be shown on Comcast SportsNet and Time Warner Cable as part of the WCC Game of the Week with Ari Wolfe and Brad Holland making the call. The game can also be heard live on KDOW 1220 AM with the broadcast beginning at 2 p.m. Anthony Passarelli is in his sixth season as the Broncos' play-by-play announcer.
Santa Clara was able to maintain its lead over San Diego for the No. 4 spot in the WCC standings thanks to Portland, who defeated the Toreros, 70-68, on Feb. 21. Santa Clara and San Diego both have three conference games remaining with the Broncos holding a one-game lead over USD for the No. 4 position, and in possession of the tie-breaker after winning both games against the Toreros this year. Finishing in the top four is important because the third and fourth place finishers receive a bye into the quarterfinal round of the WCC Tournament, which takes place in Las Vegas on March 6-11. If Santa Clara wins its last three WCC games and BYU loses its last three, Santa Clara would win the tiebreaker and finish third.
In the two team's last meeting, the Broncos scored the first nine points and held Portland without a field goal for the first 11:26 snapping a four-game losing skid to the Pilots with an impressive 70-46 win on Jan. 31. Marc Trasolini registered his sixth double-double of the season with a game-high 23 points on 11-of-17 shooting and added 13 rebounds. Brandon Clark scored 15 points off the bench while Raymond Cowels III (11) and Kevin Foster (10) also scored in double figures. Yannick Atanga, making his second start of the season, added a career-high tying 13 rebounds. SCU shot 50.0 percent from the field and limited Portland to just 25 percent shooting (13-of-52). Santa Clara will attempt to complete its first regular season sweep of Portland since the 2007 season and will need to break a 5-game losing streak at the Chiles Center in order to do so. It would be the fourth team Santa Clara has swept this year in WCC play (USF, Pepperdine and San Diego).
Santa Clara's 85-42 loss at No. 3 Gonzaga on Feb. 20 was its worst since losing by 45 points, 94-49, at then No. 6 Stanford on Dec. 22, 1998. SCU scored the first bucket of the game on a runner by Foster, but the Zags scored the next 15 points and 22 of the next 25 cruising to a 44-15 halftime lead. Trasolini opened the second half with a dunk 14 seconds in, but Gonzaga responded with a 14-2 run to open a 58-19 lead with just over 13 minutes remaining. The Broncos shot a season-low 30.2 percent (16-of-53) from the field and B. Clark was the long Bronco in double-figures with 14. For the first time this season all five of SCU's starters were held below 10 points in a game. The Broncos have lost four games this season by double-digits and three times they followed a loss with a victory. SCU most recently suffered an 84-63 loss to Saint Mary's on Feb. 7 and defeated San Diego 61-52 the next game. On Jan. 12 the Broncos lost to BYU 82-64 and followed that game with an 85-54 beating of USF on Jan. 17.
Purple
The Broncos lead the all-time series with Portland 56-30 snapping a four-game losing streak to the Pilots with a 70-46 win earlier this season on Jan. 31. Santa Clara owns a 22-20 record in games played in Portland, but has lost its last five games at the Chiles Center, including the last two by exactly 10 points (84-74 on 1/5/12 and 78-68 on 2/19/11). SCU's last win in Portland came on Feb. 10, 2007 with a 76-53 decision. The Broncos will try and sweep the season series from Portland for the first time since 2007 and the 17th time overall. Ryan Nicholas collected two of his six double-double games last season against Santa Clara and he was the only Pilot to reach double-figures in the earlier meeting scoring 14 points. He tops the Pilots averaging 13.0 ppg and 8.6 rpg. In his last four games against SCU he's scored 76 points (19 ppg) and is shooting 60.9 percent from the field (28-of-46).

Tied For The Tops
Marc Trasolini (99), Raymond Cowels III (78) and Kevin Foster (115) have started all 28 games for SCU this season and have combined for 292 starts in their Santa Clara careers. Evan Roquemore has started 27 of 28 games and has 82 career starts under his belt. The remaining nine players on the roster have a total of 122 career starts with Niyi Harrison leading the group with 44.
Foster became the sixth Bronco to start 100 career games when SCU defeated Wagner for the Cable Car Classic title on Dec. 22 and his 115 starts are second-most in school history. With a start at Portland, he will tie the school record of 116 set by Brian Jones from 1996-01. By playing in the Portland game, Cowels III and Trasolini will tie Ben Dowdell (2007-11) as the all-time leaders having played in 128 career games each.
All of Foster's scoring exploits have been chronicled, but he may well go down as one of the greatest all-around players to ever compete in the WCC. One of just four players to score over 2,100 career points, Foster leads the WCC this season with 2.4 spg and is No. 6 with 4.4 apg. Through his career Foster has amassed 2,191 points, 421 assists and 208 steals joining LMU's Terrell Lowery as the only players in WCC history to accumulate more than 2,000 points, 400 assists and 200 steals (Lowery recorded 2,201 points, 689 assists and 231 steals).
Four In This Club
There have been 31 players in the history of SCU basketball to score 1,000 career points and four of them are on the current roster. SCU was the first Division I school with three 1,000 point scorers on its roster on Dec. 15, 2012 when Evan Roquemore scored his 1000th career point; and Santa Clara is now the third school in Division I this season to have four active 1,000 career point scorers after Raymond Cowels III (1,001) joined the club in the win over Pepperdine. Santa Clara is the first team in West Coast Conference history to have four 1,000 point career scorers in the same season. There are now three other teams nationally with a quartet of 1,000 point scorers: N.C. State accomplished the feat on Jan. 22, 2013 vs. Wake Forest, Davidson matched them on Feb. 9, 2013 vs. App. State and No. 1 Indiana accomplished this as well a few nights after Santa Clara on Tues., Feb. 19 vs. Michigan State.
The three Broncos averaging double figures are Kevin Foster (17.9 ppg, 2,191 career points), Marc Trasolini (15.1 ppg, 1,536) and Evan Roquemore (12.1 ppg, 1,200). Foster is No. 2 nationally in active career points scored behind Lehigh's C.J. McCollum (2,361) who is out for the season with a broken foot.
Foster became SCU's all-time scoring leader, surpassing 1980 WCC Player of the Year and former NBA star Kurt Rambis, in a win at St. Louis on Nov. 14 and became the fourth player in WCC history to score 2,100 career points vs. CSU Bakersfield on Jan. 23. Not even ranked in the top 25 career scorers in WCC history when the season began, Foster currently sits at No. 3 after passing Bill Cartwright (2,116) with his 15-point effort at San Diego on Jan. 26 and needs 11 points to move past LMU's Terrell Lowery, who scored 2,201 from 1988-92, for the No. 2 spot. Foster has 23 double-digit scoring games this season and 105 in his 123 game career.
Marc Trasolini became the 11th Bronco to score 1,500 career points when he tallied 13 vs. Saint Mary's on Feb. 7. With 1,536 career points Trasolini is 35 behind Kyle Bailey for the No. 10 spot. Bailey scored 1,571 points from 2001-05. Trasolini scored 23 points at San Diego on Jan. 26 moving ahead of Bud Ogden (1,437) and Mike Stewart (1,446) into 11th on the school's career list.
Evan Roquemore joined the 1,000-point club this season, reaching the plateau in a win at Pacific on Dec. 15. He scored his 1,100th career point at LMU on Jan. 10, becoming just the 25th player in school history to score that many. His 18 points vs. Saint Mary's on Feb. 7 helped him move past Nathan Fast (1996-00, 1,182) into the 23rd spot. He scored two points at Gonzaga to become the 23rd Bronco player to score 1,200 career points.
Raymond Cowels III has played in all but one game during his four-year career (family funeral) and has started 58 straight times since the beginning of the 2011-12 season. RC3 is fourth on the team in scoring with 9.6 ppg and became the fourth member of the current roster to score 1,000 career points and the 31st in school history when he scored eight on Feb. 16 vs. Pepperdine. He scored his 1,001th point on a three, his only three of the game, going 1-9 from beyond the arc vs. the Waves. He now has 1,004 career points.

With 19 wins this season, SCU has amassed its second-highest victory total in Kerry Keating's six seasons and have the third-most wins in the program's last 12 years. After going winless (0-16) in the WCC in 2012, SCU is experiencing one of the finest turnarounds in league history in 2013. Santa Clara's seven-game improvement so far this year ties for the fourth-best in WCC history, matching SMC (1956), UOP (1964), LMU (1986) and USD (1990), who all won seven more WCC games than the previous season. LMU holds the top two single-season turnarounds in league history going from 0-14 in 1987 to 10-4 in 1988 (+10) and from 2-12 in 2011 to 11-5 in 2012 (+9). Pepperdine had an eight-game improvement from the previous season in both 1979 and '82.
Playing together for three full seasons, fifth-year seniors Marc Trasolini and Kevin Foster have combined for 59 victories. Add in the four wins from Foster's sophomore year before he broke his foot in the win at UC Santa Barbara on Dec. 1, 2009 and the duo has won 63 games together during their time on the court (Foster played in six games in 2009-10 before being redshirted due to a broken foot that ended his season and Trasolini was redshirted due to a pre-season torn ACL in 2011-12).

The Broncos are 16-2 this season when leading at halftime and have won their last six games when holding an advantage at the break … In four games this season after failing to score in double-figures, Kevin Foster is averaging 21.8 points while reaching the 20-point mark three times. He scored 29 points at Duke on Dec. 29 after scoring a season-low 2 points vs. Wagner on Dec. 22. Foster scored just four points in SCU's last game, a loss at Gonzaga on Feb. 20 … Santa Clara's point total in its 85-42 loss at Gonzaga on Feb. 20 is its lowest since a 70-40 loss to Saint Mary's on Feb. 21, 2004. SCU's margin of defeat (43) was also greater than its point total … For the first time this season the Broncos failed to get a double-digit scoring from at least one of their five starters during the loss at Gonzaga on Feb. 20 … SCU leads the WCC in blocked shots and has three of the top nine shot blockers in the league. Marc Trasolini is No. 2 with 46, Robert Garrett at No. 3 with 41 and Yannick Atanga is tied for No. 7 with 24 … Foster has scored over 100 points against every WCC team except BYU (62) and Pepperdine (99). He's scored 100 points in six career games against Portland … SCU has three winning streaks of five or more games this season … Brandon Clark is the only non-starter to have more than one double-digit scoring game off the bench. Clark has scored 10 or more points nine times this season, including in three straight games and five of the last six … SCU has held opponents to fewer than 20 first half points five times … Foster is the only SCU player to attempt more than 200 three-point shots in a season. He's done it for a third time this season with 240.
Traz Tops
Playing against Portland for the first time since Feb. 19, 2011, senior Marc Trasolini posted his sixth double-double of the season with a game-high 23 points on 11-of-17 shooting with 13 rebounds in SCU's 70-46 win on Jan. 31. The point total was his highest in seven career games against the Pilots and he has made 57.9 percent of his career field goal attempts (33-of-57) with 41 rebounds. Starting all 28 games this season and averaging nearly 31 minutes, Trasolini is all over the WCC stat sheets coming in at No. 1 in offensive rebounds (3.0), No. 2 In blocked shots (1.6), No. 3 in rebounding (7.9), No. 4 in FG percentage (54.7) and No. 7 in scoring (15.1).
Trasolini has also been named as one of the 10 finalist's for the Senior CLASS Award. The men's Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Final Four. Nationwide fan voting has begun and Bronco fans are encouraged to vote for Trasolini every day at the following website through March 25.
To be eligible for the award, the senior must have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 candidates announced in October.
Trasolini became the fourth player in school history to be named to the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-American list on Feb. 19 when he was named third team nationally. He is the only player in the WCC and Pac 12 to be named to the CoSIDA All-District Academic All-American list three straight competition years this Feb. (2010, '11, '13). Trasolini is in his fourth quarter of MBA work and graduated cum laude in March 2012 with a degree in Finance (3.65 GPA).
Kerry Keating had this to say about Trasolini in the community. "On our annual trip to the Great America park to spend the day with Courageous Kids (kids with cancer) Marc has been front and center each year. At 6-9 240, he is easily visible, but the kids feel his heart when he spends time with them because he is a good person, not because he is a basketball player and tall. Marc has been a fixture at our annual summer camp and relishes his role as teacher and role model, and has developed a comfort in being easily noticeable but has more so developed strength in being a role model and good citizen."

Sophomore Brandon Clark has emerged as the top backcourt option off the bench for the Broncos. Over the last five games Clark has averaged just over 21 minutes of court time, contributing 71 points on 21-of-44 shooting (47.7%) with 11 assists. Clark led the team with 14 points at No. 3 Gonzaga at Feb. 20. Clark scored 15 points in the win over Pepperdine on Feb. 16, dropping in a career-best seven free throws in 10 tries. He also hit 4-of-7 from the field with three assists and no turnovers. Against San Diego on Feb. 14, Clark and four other reserves provided a spark with a 14-6 run midway through the second half turning a 3-point deficit into a 5-point lead in just under six minutes of play. Clark scored six of the 14 points during that run. He has reached double-figures in scoring five times in the last six games and is the only non-starter to have more than one double-digit scoring game on the season.
Cameroon's Main Man
Over the last seven games sophomore Yannick Atanga has been a force in the middle for Santa Clara. Atanga recorded a season-high and career-high tying four blocked shots in the win over Pepperdine on Feb. 16 and has multiple blocks five times totaling 13 swats. Through his first 21 games he totaled 11 blocks and had just three multiple-block games. Atanga has 24 blocked shots for the season placing him third on the team and tied for 9th with 0.9 blocks per game and ranks No. 4 in WCC-only games with 1.4. He's been working the boards as well during the seven-game stretch totaling 57 caroms (8.1 rpg), including a career-high tying 13 against Portland on Jan. 31. Atanga has been efficient on the boards in conference-only games hauling down 99 of his 167 rebounds against WCC opponents to place No. 5 with 7.6 rpg.
Heating Up The Microwave
Kevin Foster was nicknamed 'Microwave' by his father Rick Foster during his youth after the Detroit Piston's Vinnie Johnson. Johnson earned the nickname 'the Microwave' from Celtics guard Danny Ainge for his ability to score many points in a short period of time, heating up the offense. Climbing the Three-Point Ladder
Kevin Foster is the WCC's career leader with 392 after breaking a tie with LMU's Jeff Fryer vs. BYU). Foster hit his 364th career 3 knocking down a shot from the corner with 10:44 left in the first half vs. BYU on Jan. 12 for the record. Foster sits in 13th place on the NCAA Division I all-time threes made list with 392 with one more tying him for 12th place all-time. He is eight away from becoming the 11th player in Division I to make 400 career threes. Foster's 140 made threes in WCC games is No. 4 all-time in league history. Sitting at No. 3 on the WCC list is Gonzaga's Blake Stepp with 143 threes made in WCC games (2000-04). LMU's Jeff Fryer holds the WCC record in league-only games with 166 threes made in 49 games (1987-90). His three threes at BYU Feb. 2 broke two-time NBA MVP and former Bronco Steve Nash's school record. Nash made 132 in his 56 league games and is No. 2 all-time for the Broncos with 263 threes, a record Foster eclipsed early his junior year.
With 1,089 attempted, Foster is the SCU and WCC leader and he ranks No. 7 in NCAA Division I history. He needs 104 attempts to break the all-time NCAA record set by Keydren Clark in 2006 (1,192, Saint Peter's). Foster has attempted 10 or more 3s in a game 11 times this season and 55 times in his 123 game career.

For the second time this season, Foster was the WCC Player of the Week, earning the honor on Jan. 21 after he averaged 27.5 ppg, including 57.1 percent from beyond the arc (12-of-21), in a pair of road wins at USF, winning 85-54, and 83-76 at Pepperdine. Foster averaged 33 minutes per game hitting six threes in both victories. He also shot 62.5 percent for the week (20-of-32) and recorded his first career double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds at USF. On the week he averaged 6.0 rpg, 3.0, apg and 2.5 spg.
In SCU's 88-75 win over Air Force on March 18, 2011, Foster broke the school record with nine threes, tying a career-high with 36 points. He also had a career-high 36 in Santa Clara's 85-71 win over Gonzaga on Jan. 20, 2011. Foster shattered the WCC single season threes made record with 140 in 2010-11, leading the country, and grabbed the nation's top spot in threes made per game as well with 3.68.
Foster's 768 points in 2010-11 were No. 6 on the WCC's single season points scored list as he finished as the leading scorer in a single season in the Bay Area as well. He broke the school's single season mark for points scored, minutes played, threes made and threes attempted that year. He was named first-team All-WCC and was named the WCC Player of the Month in February and March. He was named the WCC Player of the Year by CollegeInsider.com.
Dishes
A 2013 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award nominee, Evan Roquemore is one of the top assist men in the WCC. Roquemore has at least five assists in 21 of the team's 28 games ranking No. 2 in the WCC. He is also second on the team in minutes played with 880. During SCU's Jan. 10 game at LMU, Roquemore scored his 1,100th career point and collected his 400th career assist joining Brian Jones, Steve Nash, Kyle Bailey and Kevin Foster as the only Broncos to amass that many points and assists over a career. He produced his first double-double game of the season, and third career, with 16 points and a career-high 10 rebounds in the Cable Car Classic title game win over Wagner on Dec. 22.
Roquemore has 156 assists for the season and has a chance to break John Woolery's 1993-94 single season school record of 190. With 453 career assists, Roquemore has an outside chance of becoming the fourth Bronco with 500 by the time his junior season ends. He is No. 5 on the school's all-time assist list. He needs 30 to pass Eddie Joe Chavez (1974-78), who collected 482 assists in his time with the Broncos.
Golden Gate Bridge
With 15 points in a win at San Diego on Jan. 26, Kevin Foster passed former USF great Bill Cartwright for No. 3 on the WCC and Bay Area career scoring list. Foster, who has scored 2,191 career points, is chasing Terrell Lowery for the No. 2 spot on the WCC chart, needing 11 points to overtake the former LMU standout, who scored 2,201 points from 1988-92. To pass No. 1 all-time – LMU's Hank Gathers (1987-90) for the WCC's top spot (2,490) – Foster would need to score 300 points. Foster became SCU's career points leader, overtaking 1980 WCC Player of the Year Kurt Rambis, in a 74-62 win at St. Louis on Nov. 14.
Foster has reached double figures 23 times in 28 games this season, has topped the 20-point mark 13 times, and scored at least 30 in a game twice to lead the Broncos in scoring. He is just the fourth player to score 2,100 points in WCC history. Foster became the seventh player in West Coast Conference history to score 2,000 career points, reaching that mark on a runner in the lane early in the second half vs. Gonzaga on Jan. 5. He scored his 1,900th career point on a 3-point basket at Pacific on Dec. 15 and added career point No. 1,800 on a three-pointer against Utah State on Nov. 28.
Against No. 10 Gonzaga on Jan. 5, he became the fourth player in Bay Area Division I history (includes Cal, Stanford, Santa Clara, Saint Mary's, USF and San Jose State), and the first in 21 years, to score 2,000 career points, joining Stanford's Todd Lichti (2,336) and Adam Keefe (2,319) and USF's Bill Cartwright (2,116).
