Broncos Announce Staff Changes With Men's Basketball

Santa Clara head men's basketball coach Kerry Keating, entering his seventh year at the helm of the Broncos, announced three promotions on his staff Tuesday and the hiring of a video coordinator and strength and conditioning coach.  The video coordinator is a familiar face to Bronco basketball fans.

Sam Scholl, in his seventh year with the Broncos, has been promoted to Associate Coach.  Kyle Schwan, the Director of Basketball Operations last season, has been promoted to assistant coach with Dustin Kerns leaving the staff to return to Wofford.  Brandon Rosenthal, the video coordinator last season, has been promoted to Director of Basketball Operations.  Jesse Pruitt will enter his second year as an assistant coach and is entering his sixth year with the staff.

Working for the men's and women's basketball programs, both staffs are excited to welcome back Bronco alum Kyle Bailey '05 as the video coordinator. Evan Van Becelaere has also been added as the head strength and conditioning coach.

Scholl, who graduated from San Diego in 2001 after playing for the Toreros for two years, enters his seventh season with the Broncos.  Prior to coming to SCU, Scholl was an assistant coach at San Diego for seven years under then-head coach Brad Holland.

"Sam has been a part of our staff from day one here and also possesses 15 overall years of WCC involvement, starting with his junior year in college," said Keating. "With that, I am happy to announce him as our associate coach.  It is very hard-earned and well-deserved!"

"It has been a great honor to represent this outstanding University and basketball program," said Scholl.  "I have been humbled to have the chance to work with great people on our staff and in our athletic department that have taught me so much.  It is a great pleasure to interact with outstanding student-athletes on our team every day and to help in the process of them reaching our team goals as well as their own individual goals. I'm extremely excited for the upcoming season and the future of our program!"

In his second year with the Broncos, prior to joining the SCU staff, Schwan worked as an administrative assistant at Arizona State University under head coach Herb Sendek for two years.  He also spent a year at Northern Illinois as the video coordinator.  Schwan was a member of the legendary coach Don Meyer's program at Northern State University for six seasons (two redshirt years due to injury).

"Kyle has quickly established himself in our program after arriving last summer with a tremendous amount of energy and experience," said Keating. "We are excited to have him able to move into a coaching role for our team."

"I am very grateful for the opportunity to serve on our basketball staff here at Santa Clara as an assistant coach," said Schwan. "I look forward to supporting our student-athletes, Coach Keating, our athletic program and the university as a whole with the energy and commitment it takes to achieve at the highest level. Santa Clara is a special place, and it is a blessing to be a contributing member of the Bronco Family!"

Rosenthal was promoted this summer to the Director of Basketball Operations after serving as the Bronco video coordinator for one year.  Prior to coming to Santa Clara, he finished his master's at St. Edwards University where he served as a graduate assistant.  Before his time in Texas, he served as an assistant coach with the Rochester RazorSharks under four-time ABA Champion head coach Rod Baker. Baker was an assistant at Seton Hall when Keating was an undergraduate. Rosenthal played two years and was an undergraduate assistant for two years at St. John Fisher College.

"Like those before him, Brandon was able to make a positive impact in our video coordinator position and is well prepared for this next challenge of the DOBO," said Keating. "We are excited to be able to keep our continuity with Brandon in this position."

"I love our staff, team, administration, and campus community," said Rosenthal.  "The alumni have welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like one of their own.  Coach Keating is building something special and taking the program to new heights.  I'm thankful to be a Bronco, to fill a role on this staff and take on new responsibilities!"

Graduating in 2005 from Santa Clara after a successful career with the Broncos, Bailey spent the last eight years playing professional basketball abroad.  While with the Broncos, he led the team in assists and minutes played three times; three pointers twice; and free throw percentage and steals once.  He is No. 3 all-time in career three pointers behind WCC record holder Kevin Foster '13 and Steve Nash '96.

"We are excited to be able to add Kyle Bailey to our staff," said Keating.  "As a former successful player here, and one who earned his degree, he was able to extend his career playing in Europe.  This is a great opportunity for us. And anytime we can bring former players closer to our current ones it's an added bonus.  Welcome back Kyle!"

"The chance to be working for the basketball programs as the video coordinator is an amazing opportunity," said Bailey. "I am very excited to be rejoining the Santa Clara family."

VanBecelaere comes to Santa Clara after graduating from Kansas in 2013.  VanBecelaere played baseball at Crowder College until his career ended from an elbow injury. While an undergraduate at Kansas he assisted Exercise Physiologists with various studies to help improve research findings for the field of strength and conditioning as part of the Kansas Exercise Science Laboratory.  VanBecelaere later became interested in how the research could be applied in a weight room setting.  He began working with both the basketball teams under coach Andrea Hudy. VanBecelaere was responsible for the implementation of Force Plate hardware and software to help improve sports performance for the Kansas Strength and Conditioning program.  He also worked with softball, baseball, track and women's soccer.

Prior to Santa Clara, VanBecelaere had additional experience at Sparta Performance Science in Menlo Park, Calif., under Dr. Phil Wagner.

"We are fortunate to be able to add Evan to our staff.  He comes from the stable of Andrea Hudy, one of the most well respected and highly thought of strength coaches in the college basketball," said Keating.  "His experience with the University of Kansas and his great energy and passion for our players overall well being and improvement will be a big asset to our program."

"I am fortunate to work with a program that is so dedicated to the success of their student-athletes," said VanBecelaere. "Every day we, as a whole, are working to create an environment that will be beneficial for the student-athletes on a greater scale than just what they do on the court.  I have the opportunity to help further build programs and lead the student-athletes in a direction that is both positive and applicable to their lives outside of the athletic department. These athletes give their best on a daily basis, so it's easy to match their dedication and push them to reach new limits."
