Men's Basketball Hosts San Jose State In Second Game of Doubleheader at Leavey Center

Santa Clara Game Notes

Playing its second of two home games to start the regular season, Santa Clara will host San Jose State on Tues., Nov. 12 at 8:15 pm. The two school's women's teams will play at 5:30 pm in the Leavey Center as part of a SCU vs. SJSU doubleheader.

The Broncos will go on a two-game road swing after Tuesday night. They will play at Cal State Fullerton on Sat., Nov. 16 a 3 pm before travelling to the Midwest next week to play at No. 21 Notre Dame on Fri., Nov. 22.

The Broncos are fresh off a 26-12 campaign last season that saw them win their second post-season title in three years, the CBI at George Mason on April 5 (80-77).  It's hard to imagine any team in the country entering this season with more production lost than the Broncos. With the five seniors graduating in June of 2013, they took with them 13,455 minutes played, 6,188 points scored, 2,149 rebounds, 705 assists and 492 steals.

But Kerry Keating, entering his seventh season with the Broncos, brought in seven newcomers, including Jerry Brown, a graduate transfer from Fresno State.  Santa's Clara's roster is thick with rookies, including freshman-redshirt Nate Kratch and four true freshmen: Jared Brownridge, Jalen Richard, Jarvis Pugh and Emmanual Ndumanya.

The Broncos started the 2013-14 season with a bang.  SCU came away with a 45-point victory over Bethesda on Nov. 8 to open the year.  Santa Clara was led by diaper dandy Jared Brownridge, who scored 25 points, including five threes with six assists.  Brownridge was just one three made shy of tying the school record for freshmen set by Steve Nash in 1993.  Jalen Richard chipped in 15, Jerry Brown 13 and Julian Clarke 11.

This will be the regular season debut game for San Jose State's new head coach Dave Wojcik.  Wojcik joined the Spartans in April after spending the last three seasons as associate head coach at Boise State.  The Spartans have played two exhibitions and came away with a 1-1 record. They lost to CSU Monterey Bay, 78-69, on Nov. 4 and then defeated Pacific Union, 93-42, on Nov. 6.  The Spartans will play in the Mountain West Conference this season.

Look and Listen

The San Jose State game on Tuesday will be broadcasted live (audio and video streaming) on the web at www.SantaClaraBroncos.com and also live on KDOW 1220 AM with the broadcast beginning at 8:15 p.m. Pacific.  Anthony Passarelli is in his sixth season as the Broncos' play-by-play announcer. John Stege joins Passarelli at home games as the color analyst.  Out of the listening area, KDOW is streamed online at www.1220kdow.com.

Cross Town Rivals

Santa Clara will host cross-town rival San Jose State on Tuesday night in the two team's 104th meeting.  SCU leads the series against SJSU 74-29.  Since 1980, Santa Clara has played San Jose State 31 times and Santa Clara has won 21 of those meetings.

Santa Clara has won nine of its last 11 meetings vs. the Spartans, including the last four of five games.  Santa Clara won five games straight against the Spartans from Dec. 3, 2003 - Dec. 8, 2007.

Travelling a couple miles across San Jose, Santa Clara picked up its seventh win last season behind the 16 points of Evan Roquemore with a 75-54 victory over San Jose State on Dec. 12, 2012.  Raymond Cowels III added 13 points and Kevin Foster had 11 points with six assists.

Two years ago, behind the first career double-double of then-sophomore John McArthur, who tallied 19 points and 10 rebounds, Santa Clara defeated San Jose State 84-58 on Nov. 19, 2011 at the Leavey Center. McArthur was a perfect 11 of 11 from the free throw line.

In the team's 80-69 win at SJSU on Dec. 10, 2010, Kevin Foster picked up West Coast Conference Player of the Week honors after leading his team to a 67-63 victory at San Jose State.  Two days before Christmas on Dec., 23, 2009, San Jose State won 74-68 in the Leavey Center.  Santa Clara won at San Jose State, 59-56, on Dec. 3, 2008.  The two split the series in 2007-08 with both winning on the other's floor.  SCU won 73-63 at SJSU on Dec. 8, 2007 and then SCU lost 62-59 at home on Jan. 7, 2008.

Red Cross Donations for Typhoon Haiyag

With a massive relief effort ongoing in the Philippines due to Thyphoon Haiyan this past weekend, Santa Clara University announced Monday it will collect donations for the Red Cross before, during and after its doubleheader with San Jose State University on Tues., Nov. 12.  The women will play at 5:30 pm with the men's game tipping at 8:15 pm.  Both games are being hosted in the Leavey Center at Santa Clara University.

Santa Clara will have four stations to take collections for the Red Cross with the money being donated directly to those in need because of Typhoon Haiyan.  Santa Clara will have a collection station at the front door, another at the Bronco merchandise table, a third at the Ruff Riders entrance and will also be taking a collection from the Bronco Bench Foundation Bistro at halftime.

"Please join the Santa Clara Basketball family in doing whatever we can to help those in need as a result of this terrible disaster," said Bronco head coach Kerry Keating.  "Any level of support will help and hopefully our collective donation can be of some assistance to any in need. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of this disaster."

"Any support and relief we can supply to the people affected by this tragic event is crucial," said Bronco head women's basketball coach Jennifer Mountain. "There are thousands in need and if we can provide an outlet for those to reach out and help then I think this is beneficial."

Whether you are a Bronco fan or a fan of the visiting Spartan teams, the donations will be appreciated with so many in desperate need of help.

"The very best thing about Santa Clara is how it instills in everyone it touches a genuine concern for others and a desire to lend a hand to those most in need in the world," said Bronco Athletic Director Dan Coonan.  "We are happy to create a vehicle through which people can support victims of this tragedy."
