Men's Basketball Inks Aussie Native As Part Of 2014 Class

Santa Clara head men's basketball coach Kerry Keating announced Wednesday that Australian native Kai Healy has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Broncos, joining Santa Clara's three signees from the November 2013 signing day. The 2014 Santa Clara class is complete and includes includes Stephen Edwards (Oklahoma City, Okla.), Kai Healy (Wahroonga (Sydney), Australia), Matt Hubbard (Colville, Wash.) and Evan Wardlow (Woodland Hills, Calif.).

"We are very excited about the addition of Kai to the Bronco family! He brings the same level of competiveness and success that his classmates and future teammates have enjoyed prior to coming to the Mission campus, and will positively add to our culture of development and improvement," said Bronco head coach Kerry Keating. "He made a great impression on us last summer and carried that over to a successful senior campaign this season helping his team to a national finals appearance. Along with Stephen, Evan and Matt, we welcome Kai to the Bronco Family!"

"I chose Santa Clara as it is a great school, in a strong conference and in an awesome location," said Healy. "The weather also reminded me of my home back in Sydney. When I attended camp last June - I knew that this is where I wanted to be. The facilities and campus really impressed me, and the coaches struck me as hard-working and dedicated to the players on and off the court, which was important to me.  I believe that the team is building for the future, and with help from the coaches and staff, I hope to become a key part of the Broncos' future success."

Healy graduated from The Scots College in Bellevue Hill (Sydney) in Dec., 2013. He played for coach David Todd.  In 2013 his team was 40-1 and lost in the national finals to Lake Ginninderra, who was led by potential NBA first round draft pick Dante Exum.  Healy scored 25 points, including four of five threes, in the national final.  He was all-conference, all-region and all-state in 2013.  He was all-conference and all-region 2011 and '12.  

His senior year he averaged 18 ppg, 7 rpg, 3 apg and 2 spg.  His junior year he averaged 15 ppg, 6 rpg, 2.5 apg and 1.5 spg.  His sophomore year he averaged 10 ppg, 4 rpg, 2 apg and 1 spg.

He played on the NSW U16, U18 and U20 teams (2011-14), captaining the team twice. He also played on the Australia U19 team.  His Australia U-17 three-on- three team that won the gold medal at the 2013 Youth Olympics. He led the 2011 U16 and 2014 U20 New South Wales teams in scoring at the Australian Junior National Championships. In addition, he led the Australia U19 team in scoring at the 2013 FIBA Oceania Pacific Championships.

He was born in Indianapolis, Ind. His father, Mike, is a University of Notre Dame graduate and his mother, Heidi, is an Indiana University graduate.  His grandfather, Don Healy, played football at University of Maryland, then with Chicago Bears (1958-59) and Dallas Cowboys (1960-62).  His Uncle Tim played football at Duke University.
