SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Polishing off two degrees at University of Notre Dame before graduating in 2014, Dominic Romeo, a current graduate student at Santa Clara studying Theology, will suit up for the Bronco men's basketball this season as a walk-on. With the Fighting Irish, Romeo competed as a walk-on defensive end for the nationally-renowned football team.
The 6-7, 240 lb. forward from Turlock, Calif. is excited to make an immediate impact for the Broncos this year. "My experience getting to know the players, coaches and everyone involved in the basketball program has been awesome. It has far exceeded my initial expectations," said Romeo. "Playing basketball with the guys every day has been so fun! The level of competition is extremely high and the guys do a great job pushing one another and me as well. I have already noticed improvement individually, but more importantly we have gotten better as a team unit."
Away from the court, Romeo has excelled in the classroom and developed into a community leader. In 2014, he graduated magna cum laude from Notre Dame with a double major in Chinese and Political Science. During his time in South Bend, Ind., Romeo founded the first-ever Chinese Language Club at the university, acted as the president of Notre Dame's Political Science Honors Society and conducted independent research in China on three separate occasions among other notable accomplishments.
Besides hitting the books, Romeo has spent time serving the global community, volunteering in locations such as Honduras (working in a farm on an orhanage); Tanzania (teaching English at a rural vocational training center); Kenya (acting as a doctor's assistant in a surgery center), Uganda (doing research on teaching methods in a school) and the United State's Appalachian region (rebuilding homes). In the future, Romeo hopes to work as a medical doctor in a developing country.
"Though I have taken this rather windy path, a common thread throughout much it has been my faith, which has largely shaped my desire to want to be a doctor," added Romeo. "Through my experience I have learned that there is tremendous pain throughout much of the world; pain that can be alleviated through loving service. My only hope, my prayer, is that I live a life of such service for those whose suffering we often forget."
Before competing for the Fighting Irish and attending Notre Dame, Romeo played high school basketball at Pitman High School in Turlock, Calif. During his senior campaign, he averaged 22 ppg and 12 rpg. His accomplishments on the court granted him the honor of being named All-League MVP runner-up as well a member of the All-District First Team.
In his spare time, Romeo enjoys reading, going to church, speaking Chinese, playing the guitar and spending time with his friends and family.
