WATCH | Healy, Romeo Come up Big in Broncos' Win
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara basketball forward and graduate student Dominic Romeo has been recognized as one of the five nominees from the West Coast Conference for the 2015 Allstate NABC Good Works team, announced Wednesday. The award recognizes basketball student-athletes for their off-the-court commitment to community service. The final roster of 20 award recipients will be unveiled in February.
The other four from the WCC include San Diego's Johnny Dee, BYU's Tyler Haws, Gonzaga's Kevin Pangos and Pacific's T.J. Wallace.
Away from the court, Romeo has excelled in the classroom and developed into a community leader. In 2014, he graduated magna cum laude with a 3.84 GPA from Notre Dame with a double major in Chinese and Political Science. During his time in South Bend, Ind., Romeo founded the first-ever Chinese Language Club at the university and he acted as the president of Notre Dame's Political Science Honors Society, Pi Sigma Alpha. He conducted independent research in China on three separate occasions among other notable accomplishments. He wrote an honors thesis on the prospects of Democracy in China, entitled Wukan: Chinese Approved Democracy. He is also fluent in Mandrian Chinese and served as a Chinese tutor.
Working on his Master's in Theology at Santa Clara, he works at the writing center as a tutor for undergraduate and graduate students, and professors.
Besides hitting the books, Romeo has spent time serving the global community, volunteering in locations such as Honduras (working in a farm on an orhanage); Tanzania (teaching English at a rural vocational training center); Kenya (acting as a doctor's assistant in a surgery center), Uganda (doing research on teaching methods in a school) and the United State's Appalachian region (rebuilding homes). In the future, Romeo hopes to work as a medical doctor in a developing country.
This prestigious community service award recognizes a distinguished group of student-athletes who have demonstrated a commitment to enriching the lives of others and contributing to the greater good in their communities.
College sports information directors and basketball coaches across the country nominated players who exhibit exceptional leadership skills and an unwavering commitment to volunteerism. From the 158 NABC nominees and 93 WBCA nominees, distinguished voting panels will select two 10-member teams comprised of five student-athletes from the NCAA® Division I level and five student-athletes from NCAA Divisions II, III and the NAIA.
