SANTA CLARA, Calif. — On this week's edition of Bronco weekly sports wrap, hosts and student-athletes Denzel Johnson and Nici Gilday get you up to date on the latest in Bronco sports.
Both men's and women's basketball returned from last weekend's WCC Championships in Las Vegas. Men's basketball beat LMU in the first round and fell on a last second shot to second-seeded BYU in the quarterfinals. The team wraps up its season at 14-18 after falling to the Cougars. Take a look at EYEBRONCO's footage from the postgame press conferences. Three players received honors at the conference level: Jared Brownridge was named First Team All-WCC, Brandon Clark received all-conference honorable mention honors, and Matt Hubbard was named to the WCC All-Freshman team. Congratulations to Nate Kratch, Andrew Papenfus and Dom Romeo, who were selected to the WCC All-Academic team.
Women's basketball returned from the Orleans Arena after defeating Portland in the opening round. They finished their season 10-18 after losing a tough matchup against second-seeded San Diego. Congratulations to Gilday for being named First Team All-WCC, as well as Brooke Gallaway and Marie Bertholdt for being named to the WCC's All-Academic team. EYEBRONCO was on hand at the press conference in Las Vegas following the San Diego game.
The men's and women's teams each won at game at the WCC Basketball Championships, a feat accomplished by only four schools in 2015.
Baseball shut out Cal Poly 3-0 and hit the road for a weekend series, losing three games to Kansas State. WCC play begins against LMU on Friday at 6, followed by first pitch times of Saturday at 6 and Sunday at 1. Tune in to SantaClaraBroncos.com to listen to the action.
Softball played in the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto this weekend. The team was unable to finish a comeback in the seventh inning of its final game and ultimately lost three games. The Broncos travel south to the San Diego Classic hosted by San Diego State on Friday.
Men's tennis played three matches in four days, falling to USF, Weber State, and BYU. They play Holy Names March 24 at the Degheri Tennis Center.
Women's tennis opened WCC play with a loss at San Francisco. The Broncos host UC Davis on Saturday at noon.
Women's golf played in three competitions in four weekends this February. The team finished second at the Matador Invitational. EYEBRONCO spoke with Annie Freman about the spring season.
Women's water polo traveled to UC Davis to play played in the Aggie Shootout and topped Cal State East Bay 11-5, but lost to UC Santa Barbara and Pacific. They played Wagner at home March 9 and have two weeks off before facing Harvard at home March 22.
Men's rowing traveled to Folsom to compete at Lake Natoma and took on Sacramento State. On Saturday they will race at Santa Barbara vs. UCSB and UCLA.
Track competed at the Kim Duyst Invitational at Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday. Grayson Murphy set a school record in her 3000 meter steeplechase debut and Joey Berriatua finished second overall in the 1500 meter race. They compete again at the Johnny Mathis Invitational in San Francisco on March 21.
Men's golf traveled to Tucson last Monday where they finished in third place at the National Invitational Tournament. They began play this past Sunday at the Tiger Invitational in Alabama and shot a 303 to end the first round in 10th place of a very competitive 16-team field. They wrapped up the final round Tuesday in 10th place.
Sand volleyball began its season at Stanford with two wins in three matches. They topped San Francisco and Saint Mary's but fell to host Stanford. They will play San Jose State on Thursday at 3 p.m. in Los Gatos.
