Men’s Basketball Edged by Lipscomb, 65-63, in Double Overtime

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Junior guard Josh Williams had a game-tying three-point play at the end of regulation and three free throws in the final 1.2 seconds of the second overtime to lift Lipscomb to a 65-63 victory over Santa Clara men's basketball Friday evening, on the opening day of the 49th Annual Cable Car Classic.

Evan Wardlow's tip-in off a Jared Brownridge missed driving layup gave the Broncos a 63-62 lead with 40 seconds left in the second extra session. But Williams was fouled while driving to the basket and nailed both free throws.

A long Santa Clara pass into the frontcourt went out of bounds off the Bisons with 0.7 seconds left, but Wardlow was forced into a five-second violation and Williams made one of two free throws after being fouled to send the Bisons to the victory in the season opener for both teams.

Neither team shot the ball well, connecting on only 31 percent each from the field.

"You got to learn fast when games happen like this," head coach Kerry Keating said. "I thought our inexperience showed. Obviously, didn't make the shots that have been made already this year (in the preseason)."

Brownridge, a junior guard, had a game-high 27 points, but was just 7-for-26 from the field. He nailed 10 of 11 free throws and did not register a turnover despite handling the ball for much of the second half and overtime.

"Jared did his best to keep us in the game," Keating said. "You can ride the horse only so much. We're going to have to keep searching to see who can get into that trusting mode. It's the sign of a young team a little bit."

Nathan Moran led Lipscomb with 25 points on 5-for-12 three-point shooting. Williams chipped in 13.

Sophomore forward Matt Hubbard had 14 points for the Broncos who played a double overtime game for the first time since Feb. 24, 2011 when they knocked off LMU, 94-88, at home.

After trailing for nearly the entire opening 26 minutes, the Broncos used a 15-0 spurt to take a 43-33 lead with less than nine minutes left in the game. Brownridge's 3-pointer at 13:22 gave Santa Clara a 35-33 advantage, it's first since 3-0. Hubbard then nailed back-to-back 3-pointers for the 10-point cushion.

But the Bisons, who play in the Atlantic Sun Conference, slowly chipped away. Moran hit a 3-pointer with 2:20 left in regulation to cut the deficit to 46-41 and a Williams' three from the right wing in transition with 37 seconds remaining made it 47-46.

Nate Kratch got free for layup to make it 49-46, but fouled Williams on the game-tying three-point play. Kratch led the team with eight rebounds, but played just 15 minutes due to foul trouble. He and Brendyn Taylor fouled out while Jarvis Pugh played just 21 minutes and had four fouls.

"Jarvis and Nate's foul trouble hurt us a little bit because we couldn't quite get a good rotation," Keating said.

Both teams had chances to end the game in the first overtime, but neither team could score in the final 1:43.

Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Denver opened the three-day, round-robin tournament Friday afternoon. Milwaukee pulled away from the Pioneers to post a 71-58 victory.

Lipscomb and Milwaukee will face off at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, followed by the Broncos-Pioneers tilt at 8 p.m.

Santa Clara had 11 players see action against Lipscomb and had as many as three freshmen on the floor at the same time.

"We're going to have to learn with this group as we go because they're so inexperienced, but we'll be ready to go tomorrow night," Keating said.
