Men’s Basketball Edged by Milwaukee, 71-65, in Cable Car Classic Finale

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Akeem Springs scored 17 points and Austin Arians added 14, all in the second half, to help the Milwaukee Panthers rally for a 71-65 victory Sunday in the final game of the three-day 49th Annual Cable Car Classic.

After being saddled with foul trouble in the first half, Arians connected on 4 of 8 field goals in the final 20 minutes, including a go-ahead 3-pointer from the top of the key with 5:16 remaining in the game. That bucket from the 6-foot-6 forward and tournament MVP snapped a 54-all tie and came during a 14-1 run.

The Panthers (3-0) won all three games in the four-team, round-robin tournament, knocking off Denver, 71-58, Friday and Lipscomb, 82-69, Saturday.

The Broncos (0-3) rebounded from a sluggish performance in Saturday's loss to Denver and received a breakout performance from freshman guard KJ Feagin, who scored 26 points on 11 of 14 shooting from the field.

"Our guys responded well and we got that message across, certainly felt like they had a better effort," head coach Kerry Keating said. "They were a little bit more dialed in today than yesterday so that was good."

Fellow freshman guard Matt Hauser (10 points) was the only player in double figures for the Broncos, who shot a season-best 51 percent from the field, one day after connecting on only 23 percent.

"Hopefully that these early experiences with KJ and Matt can help them grow together as our starting backcourt but at the end of the day, the result is what it is." head coach Kerry Keating said.

After scoring a combined nine points in the first two games of the season-opening tournament at Leavey Center, Feagin made shots driving to the basket, in the lane and from long range (3-for-4 on 3-pointers).

Feagin had 19 of the team's 33 second-half points, but Springs, a rugged 6-foot-4 guard, scored 13 in the final 20 minutes, most of them around the basket or at the free throw line where he was 6-for-7.

The Broncos struggled from the free-throw line, connecting on only 11 of 22 attempts, and turned the ball over 19 times.

"We shot well," Keating said. "We didn't get enough shots because of the turnovers."

Neither team led by more than four until a Hauser 3-pointer off a feed from Feagin increased the Santa Clara lead to 20-15 with 7:57 left in the first half.

The Broncos led by as many as 11 in the first half, but they went scoreless for a three-minute stretch early in the second, turning the ball over five times and enabling Milwaukee to close the gap to 38-36 with 14:17 left in the game.

Feagin's 3-pointer at 10:23 increased the lead to 49-43, but Arians answered from long range less than one minute later.

After scoring 27 points in Friday's opening game of the tournament, junior guard Jared Brownridge was held to a combined 13 in the last two contests. He had only six against Milwaukee, though attempted just five shots from the field. However, he did not turn the ball over in 23 minutes of action.

"There's a lot to learn from this weekend," Keating said. "We're going to have to be patient with them, going to have to have keep learning and teaching and growing with them and be ready to get to the next one."

The Broncos hit the road this week. They play at UC-Riverside at 7 p.m. Thursday. Santa Clara will play away from home until Dec. 5 when it entertains San Jose State.

Notes: Santa Clara used the same starting lineup for the second straight game – Matt Hauser, KJ Feagin, Jared Brownridge, Matt Hubbard and Nate Kratch … Kratch had a season-best nine rebounds … Kai Healy provided a spark off the bench in the first half. He scored all seven of his points in the first eight minutes of the game.
