Solid Effort on the Road Comes up Short as Men’s Basketball Falls to Nevada, 72-69

RENO, Nev. – Santa Clara men's basketball put together one of its grittiest efforts of the season but it was not quite enough to capture a victory in a hostile environment.

Marqueze Coleman scored 18 points and Cameron Oliver produced a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds to help Nevada edge the Broncos, 72-69, in Lawlor Events Center.

That duo combined to score 13 of the Wolf Pack's final 16 points, which helped offset Jared Brownridge's game-high 29 points, including 18 in the second half.

D.J. Fenner chipped in 17 points and eight rebounds for Nevada (8-3), which won its fourth-straight game.

Nate Kratch and Matt Hubbard each scored 12 points for the Broncos (4-8) who saw their four-game winning streak snapped.

Neither team led by more than three points during the final 9 minutes of the game, which was tied nine times.

KJ Feagin's driving layup with 3:11 left in the game snapped a 65-all tie, but Coleman, a senior guard, hit a jumper followed by a conventional 3-point play for a 70-67 lead for Nevada.

But Brownridge came down and hit floater in the lane to cut the deficit to 70-69 with 2:02 on the clock.

On Santa Clara's next possession, Feagin missed a jumper at the free-throw line, but Nevada turned the ball over and the Broncos called timeout with 28.1 seconds left.

Brownridge missed a runner in the lane with 13 seconds left. He fouled Oliver on the rebound with 10.7 seconds to go and the freshman forward hit both free throws for a 72-69 lead.

Santa Clara had a pair of attempts for a tying 3-pointer. Feagin missed from the left wing with 3 seconds left, Hubbard got the offensive rebound and fed Brownridge on the right wing who was off target at the buzzer.

"I'm proud of them for fighting on the road and not an easy game," head coach Kerry Keating. "I still think we're getting better. Now we're heading into the meat of the season with conference play."

The Broncos turned a five-point deficit into a 33-all game, but let the Wolf Pack take a 39-33 lead into the locker room. Eric Cooper, who scored 11 points, hit a 3-pointer with 44 seconds left then Lucas Stivrins hit a free throw and then a free-throw line jumper at the buzzer.

"We gave them six points in the last minute of the first half and you know that is going to come back to haunt you," Keating said.

Kratch, who averaged 19.0 points and 10.6 rebounds during the last five games, got into foul trouble after scoring eight points in the opening 6 minutes of the game. He picked up his second foul with less than 8 minutes remaining in the first half and was forced to the bench.

"Nate's second foul is something he's got to know and it kept him at nine minutes in the first half and he was cooking early," Keating said. "But he did come back and play 20 for us in the second half. He's a presence for us out there."

Brownridge nailed a pair of 3-pointers in the opening minute of the second half, but the Wolf Pack, who were held to 41 percent shooting from the field in the game, built a 8-point lead before the Broncos rallied.

Brownridge, who matched a career high with seven 3-pointers, scored seven points in a 17-4 run that made it 58-53 with 9:30 left in the game.

After that, the game was tied four more times and the lead changed hands three times.

Santa Clara was just 3-for-8 from the free throw line, including only 2-for-6 for Brownridge, who has a career percentage of 86.3.

The Wolf Pack were 15 of 22 from the line, including 7-for-7 by Coleman.

The Broncos open West Conference play Monday when they travel to Pacific. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
