SANTA CLARA, Calif. – There are still four months before the start of the 2016-17 season, but Santa Clara men's basketball has been ramping up its preparation this summer.

The team, under the direction of first-year head coach Herb Sendek, began summer workouts on June 16, and will be able to increase the workload on July 26, when the Broncos begin practicing for an exhibition tour in Italy. The 11-day trip, which includes three games, starts Aug. 20.

Summer Practice: The Broncos kicked off summer workouts on June 16. The team can have limited time on the court for eight weeks in the summer, including no more than two hours per week for basketball skill instruction. The remainder of the eight allowable hours per week is spent in the weight room or in a conditioning exercise with the sports performance staff. Summer practice concludes Aug. 4.

Heading Overseas: Per NCAA rules, basketball programs may schedule a summer exhibition trip once every four years and the Broncos are taking advantage next month when they head to Italy for 11 days, which will include three games. A key component is the practice time leading up to the team's departure. The Broncos are allowed 10 practices prior to the trip, which begins Aug. 20. They will begin tour practice on July 26, which will overlap with the eight-week summer schedule. Opponents for the games in Italy have yet to be determined.

New Faces: In addition to freshman Julian Roche and junior Akil Douglas, who signed National Letters of Intent in April, coach Herb Sendek and his staff added a pair of walk-ons to the 2016-17 roster. Sophomore guard Evan Crawford, who served as a practice player last season, and freshman Johnny Sawyer began working out with the team this summer.
