SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's basketball was unable to continue its momentum from Friday's opening night win in the 50th Annual Cable Car Classic, the debut for head coach Herb Sendek.
Brynton Lemar scored 17 points (on 6 of 10 field goals) and Chima Moneke came off the bench to add 15 (on 6 of 12 from the floor), leading UC Davis (1-1) to a 63-58 victory over the Broncos in Saturday's action at the three-day, six-game tournament, which concludes Sunday.
Henrik Jadersten scored a career-high 17 points and Jared Brownridge added 13, but the senior guard struggled from the floor, for Santa Clara (1-1), which despite poor shooting, foul trouble and turnovers still had a chance to win down the stretch.
After one of Jadersten's three blocks, the sophomore nailed a baseline jumper to cut the Aggies' lead to 55-53 with 2:54 left in the game.
However, on the ensuing possession UC Davis' J.T. Adenrele drove the floor and converted a 3-point play. The Broncos followed by missing their next six shots from the floor, including five 3-pointers. Santa Clara was just 5-for-24 from behind the 3-point line in the game.
The Broncos, who defeated Northern Arizona, 67-64, Friday, outrebounded the Aggies (36-32), but turned the ball over 17 times.
Brownridge was 4 of 19 from the floor, including missing all eight attempts from behind the 3-point line. He did move from fourth to second on the school's all-time scoring list, passing Harold Keeling (1981-85/1,731) and Kurt Rambis (1976-80/1,736). Brownridge now has 1,743 points, but needs nearly 700 more to reach all-time leader Kevin Foster (2008-13/2,423).
Jadersten was a bright spot by hitting 7 of 12 from the field and collecting six rebounds in a career-high 38 minutes of action.
Tony Lewis, who started in Friday's season-opening 67-64 win over Northern Arizona, socred eight points on 4 of 5 shooting, but fouled out in 16 minutes.
Starting forward Nate Kratch was also saddled with foul trouble, playing just 12 minutes before being disqualified.
The Broncos went through a five-minute scoring drought in the first half when they trailed by as many as eight, but a Lewis putback and Jarvis Pugh 3-pointer cut the deficit to 16-13 with 7:31 left in the first half.
A pair of free throws from Pugh with five minutes left in the opening half gave the Broncos a 22-21 lead, one they held until Siler Schneider hit a 3-pointer for a UC Davis 35-34 edge with 13:54 remaining in the game.
The teams were tied eight times, including five in the second half, and the lead changed 11 times.
Tennessee State defeated Northern Arizona, 69-65, in Saturday's nightcap. The Tigers have won both of their games. They knocked off the UC Davis, 78-64, Friday.
The Cable Car Classic concludes Sunday. UC Davis and Northern Arizona play at noon, followed by Santa Clara and Tennessee State at 2:30 p.m.

About the Cable Car Classic
In 1967, the Cable Car Classic was founded by Art Santo Domingo, a former public relations director of the San Francisco Giants, and his long-time friend, the late Harry Jupiter, a sports writer for the San Francisco Examiner. The tournament has historically played around the Christmas holiday, though three years ago held on Thanksgiving weekend.
In 32 of the tournament's 49 years, the Classic has featured a team that received a bid to the NCAA Tournament just months later. For 10 years it has featured multiple teams who would later advance. The 1995 Cable Car Classic proved to be one of the strongest fields with all four teams advancing to the 1996 NCAA Tournament in March. Penn State won the Cable Car Classic with Georgia Tech, Santa Clara and Bradley also making the postseason. Georgia Tech won the ACC that year as well.
Those participating in past Cable Car Classics read like a who's who in college basketball history. From the Santa Clara teams of the 1960's and '70's that featured the talents of Bud Ogden, Dennis Awtrey and Kurt Rambis and the USF squads, led by Kevin Restani, Winford Boynes and Bill Cartwright to traditional basketball powers such as Dean Smith's North Carolina Tar Heels featuring Michael Jordan and James Worthy and the Ralph Sampson-led Virginia Cavaliers, to the '90s with Stephen Marbury of Georgia Tech to this century's teams, including one of the Air Force Academy's best-ever teams in 2006.
