SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Jared Brownridge earned West Coast Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season on Monday.
Brownridge led the Broncos (10-9, 4-2) to a pair of road wins last week with some late-game heroics and an explosive second half. He scored a game-high 20 points, including the winning basket, propelling the Broncos to a 59-57 victory over San Diego on Thursday. Two days later, he scored 30 points, including 21 in the second half, to help Santa Clara pull away from Pepperdine in a 75-61 win.
The senior guard was 5-for-10 from behind the 3-point vs. the Toreros and had the game-winning driving layup, with 1:07 left while the shot clock was running down.
He was even more impressive from beyond the 3-point line against the Waves, hitting 7 of 13 in the game, including 5-for-7 in the second half when the Broncos matched a season high with 50 points on 60-percent shooting from the floor.
Brownridge connected on 52 percent from the behind the 3-point line in those two games, enabling Santa Clara to win back-to-back WCC road games for the first time in almost four years. The Broncos, off to their best start in conference play in six seasons, defeated San Francisco, 85-54, on Jan. 17, 2013, and Pepperdine, 83-76, two days later.
He also moved up three spots to eighth on the WCC all-time scoring list, passing Bo Kimble of Loyola Marymount (2,010/1987-90), Jim McPhee of Gonzaga (2,015/1986-90) and Johnny Dee of San Diego (2,046/2011-15). Brownridge now has 2,056 career points after posting his 11th career 30-point game in downing Pepperdine.
Brownridge was named the WCC Player of the Week on Dec. 26, after scoring 30 points in an 87-80 double-overtime road win against Valparaiso (Dec. 22).
The Broncos, who are tied for third in the WCC standings, open a four-game homestand Thursday when fourth-ranked Gonzaga visits Leavey Center.
