SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's basketball was unable to score with the same proficiency as in Thursday's record-setting victory against Pepperdine, but was still in position for a key West Coast Conference win Saturday, however San Diego's Tyler Williams had other plans.
Williams nailed a 16-foot jumper as time expired to lift the Toreros to a thrilling 60-58 double-overtime win against the Broncos who had an opportunity to move into a tie for third in the WCC standings with BYU (19-10, 10-6) which lost to Saint Mary's earlier in the evening.
Cameron Newbauer scored a game-high 24 points of 9 of 18 from the field and Brett Bailey tallied 10 for San Diego (12-16, 5-11), which had lost seven of its last eight entering the game, but was able to frustrate a Santa Clara offense that shot 64 percent just two days in earlier against Pepperdine.
KJ Feagin scored 17 points and Nate Kratch added 14, all after halftime, for the Broncos (15-14, 9-7) who are now tied for fourth in the league standings with San Francisco (19-10, 9-7), which defeated Portland Saturday.
Jared Brownridge, who was held to eight points due to foul trouble and solid defense by the Toreros, gave the Broncos a 58-55 lead on a breakaway layup with 1:57 left in the second extra session, but Neubauer nailed the tying 3-pointer on the next possession.
Feagin had a chance for the go-ahead basket, but missed a layup with 16 seconds left. After a San Diego timeout with nine seconds to go, Williams was able to maneuver for the game-winning shot, which he let go with just more than one second on the clock on the right side of the free throw line.
In the defensive struggle, each team shot 38 percent from the floor and had seven players see action.
"It's a very difficult matchup that we learned about when we escaped with a narrow (59-57 win in San Diego last month)," Santa Clara head coach Herb Sendek said. "That being said, you have less room for mental errors and we had those on defense."
Santa Clara had only seven turnovers, including three after halftime. However, the Broncos were outscored 11-4 in points off turnovers, despite San Diego producing five more.
San Diego had the final shot in regulation and Santa Clara at the end of the first overtime.
With the score tied 48-all, Feagin turned the ball over with 10 seconds left in regulation on a drive to the basket, but San Diego's Olin Carter III missed a long 3-pointer at buzzer.
Neubauer's putback of his own miss tied game at 52-all with 20 seconds left in the first overtime. On the ensuing possession, Feagin ran the clock down and appeared to have a clear shot from five feet away but came up short with two seconds remaining.
"They're a difficult team to guard and to matchup with," Sendek said. "On the other end, they made it really difficult for us with good defense."
Kratch had 10 rebounds to record his seconds-straight double-double. He had 10 of the team's 25 second-half points after going 0-for-3 from the floor in the first 20 minutes.
The Broncos didn't have the fast start of Thursday when they led by 25 just 12 minutes into the game en route to a 106-55 win against Pepperdine.
After scoring 24 points in the opening half against the Waves, Kratch was held scoreless in the opening 20 minutes.
Feagin scored 11 points, but he was one of only three Broncos to score in the half, while San Diego had six of its seven players hit the scoring column.
The lead changed hands 10 times in the game, including three in the opening half.
The Toreros led by 10 before the Broncos chopped the deficit to 37-34 on a Matt Hauser 3-pointer with 13 minutes left in the game.
San Diego's lead was never more than four in the final 10 minutes and layup from Emmanuel Ndumanya gave the Broncos a 46-45 lead, their first since late in the opening half, with 1:52 left in the game.
Bailey played all 50 minutes, while Kratch, Feagin and Hauser were on the floor for 49 apiece.
The Broncos play their final home game Thursday when Pacific visits Leavey Center. Brownridge, Kratch and fellow senior Will Burkett will be recognized prior to the game, which starts at 7 p.m.
Team Notes: Tonight's game was the 82nd meeting in the series, which began in 1953. Santa Clara leads, 46-36, and saw its three-game winning streak snapped in the series … the Broncos played their second overtime game of the season. They downed Valparaiso, 87-80, in double overtime. Santa Clara played its 19th multiple overtime game in school history. The win vs. Valpo snapped a five-game losing streak in extra session contests.
Individual Notes: Brownrige started his 125th game, equaling the school record set by Kevin Foster (2008-13) … Feagin has scored in double figures in 13 of the last 15 games. He hit 16 of 21 (76.2 percent) from behind the 3-point line in the last five games, but was only 1-for-6 against San Diego … Kratch (14 points/10 rebounds) posted his eighth-career double-double, including second in the last three games. He had 16 points and 10 rebounds in Saturday's win at Pacific … Ndumanya had a game-high 11 rebounds. He has five double-digit rebounding efforts this season, including in each of the last three games … Hauser (13 points) hit double figures for the 15th time this season. He was only in double figures once in the previous four games.
