PORTLAND, Ore. – Barret Peery, associate head coach for Santa Clara men's basketball, was named head coach at Portland State on Monday.

Peery spent the 2016-17 season under first-year head coach Herb Sendek, helping the Broncos reach the West Coast Conference Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2010-11 and tie for the best turnaround in the league at 5.0 games.

Santa Clara, which went to 17-16 from a 11-20 record in 2015-16, finished tied for fourth in the league standings despite navigating the season with seven players missing more than 70 games due to injury.

This will not be Peery's first time serving as a head coach. Before joining Sendek's staff at Arizona State for the 2014-15 season, Peery, who has a 178-30 career record, coached three years at Indian Hills Community College (Iowa) where he posted an 93-11 record, including 60-1 at home, and guided 15 players to Division I scholarships.

Peery, a native of Payson, Utah, was also the head coach at College of Southern Idaho for three seasons (2005-08), leading the program to three Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) titles, earning 2007-08 league coach of the year. He led the Golden Eagles to an 85-19 mark with two of his three teams leading the nation in scoring. During his tenure, 23 players joined NCAA Division I programs.

He returns to Portland State, which plays Big Sky Conference, as the 13th head coach in school history. Peery served as an assistant coach with the Vikings in 2002-03.

"We are thrilled for Barret, (his wife) Tracy, and the Peery Family, as they embrace a new opportunity and adventure," Santa Clara head coach Herb Sendek said. "Coach Peery is the complete and total package as a coach, and even a better person. He will most certainly lead a program that the Portland State community can be proud of and that will be easy to cheer for."

Peery played college basketball at Snow and then Southern Utah where he went on to serve as an assistant coach for four seasons (1998-02). He was also an assistant coach at Utah, Snow College and Utah Valley State College.

Portland State will hold an introductory press conference on Thursday.
