GCI Great Alaska Shootout Central | 2017-18 Basketball Tickets
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Maleke Haynes and Jacob Lampkin each scored 22 points to help Alaska-Anchorage rally and then outlast Santa Clara men's basketball 78-73 in overtime on Thursday in a consolation game in the GCI Great Alaska Shootout.
Lampkin (six) and Haynes (four), two of four Division I transfers on the roster, combined for 10 of the 12 points for the Seawolves (4-3) in overtime.
Haynes had the biggest basket of the game, nailing a 27-foot running 3-pointer as time expired in regulation. He was 7-for-12 from the field, including connecting on four of the team's five 3-pointers.
Henry Caruso scored season-high tying 18 points to lead four players in double figures for the Broncos (1-4) who shot 56 percent from the floor, but were out-rebounded 32-25 and suffered a season-high 15 turnovers.
KJ Feagin, who had 14 points, connected on a pair of free throws with 1:29 left in regulation, giving Santa Clara a 66-60 lead, but Malik Clements hit a 3-pointer with 35 seconds remaining. After Matt Hauser missed a jumper with seven seconds to go, the Seawolves got the rebound and called timeout with 4.1 seconds on the clock to set up the final play. Haynes received the ball in the backcourt, drove up the right sideline and after a couple dribbles past halfcourt launched the shot that tied the game at 66-all.
The Seawolves scored eight of the first 10 points in the extra session before the Broncos rallied.
Feagin's jumper, with one foot over the 3-point line at the top of the key, with 4.5 seconds left cut the deficit to 75-73, but Haynes was fouled with 3.1 seconds on the clock and hit 1 of 2 two free throws. He missed the second and Caruso corralled the rebound, but Clements picked off his outlet pass near midcourt and sank two free throws after being fouled.
Lampkin also had 11 rebounds for a double-double to along with three assists and two blocked shots.
Hauser had 12 of his season-high 15 points in the second half when the Broncos rallied from a 35-34 halftime deficit to lead by as many as nine three times, including with less than five minutes left in regulation.
Josip Vrankic had a career-high 16 points for the Broncos who will face Sam Houston State on Saturday in their finale at the eight-team tournament.
Alaska-Anchorage, which who plays in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference of NCAA Division II, had the look of a West Coast Conference team as Haynes, Lampkin and D.J. Ursery all transferred from Pacific after last season.
Ursery added nine points, six rebounds and four assists. Clements, who played at North Dakota State, is the other Division I transfer.
Alaska-Anchorage claimed its 56th all-time win against a Division I opponent.
The Broncos started slow, trailing by nine midway through the first half before rallying behind the play of Caruso. The senior scored seven points in a 9-0 run that pushed Santa Clara to a 30-25 lead.
Caruso had a team-best 10 rebounds to produce his second double-double in the last three games.
NOTES
• The Broncos are making their third appearance in the GCI Great Alaska Shootout, which is in its 40th, and final, year of existence.
• The Seawolves evened the all-time series record at 2-all. The Broncos defeated Alaska-Anchorage, 85-66, on Dec. 29, 1983, and then fell, 72-71, on Nov. 30, 1991, with both games taking place in the Great Alaska Shootout. The Seawolves also visited Leavey Center for the Cable Car Classic and Santa Clara came out on top 78-75 on Dec. 28, 1994.
• Matt Hauser, KJ Feagin, Emmanuel Ndumanya, Henry Caruso and Josip Vrankic started for the second-straight contest.
• Caruso (18 points/10 rebounds) posted his second double-double this season and fifth of his career. He had three at Princeton.
• Feagin and Caruso have scored in double figures in all five games this season.
NEXT UP
The Broncos will play Sam Houston State on Saturday at 1 p.m. Pacific in the seventh-place game of the tournament.
