STANFORD, Calif. – Santa Clara men's basketball was unable to continue its strong start to the season away from home.
Tyrell Terry posted 21 points, Oscar Da Silva registered a double-double (18 points/10 rebounds) and Daejon Davis scored 15 to help Stanford pull away for a 82-64 victory over the Broncos on Saturday in the first meeting between the teams in 11 years.
Josip Vrankic had 13 points for the Broncos (3-1) who had their three-game winning streak snapped and allowed the Cardinal to shoot 50 percent in the game, including 56 percent in the second half.
After trailing for much of the opening half, the Cardinal (4-0) gradually increased the lead in the second half.
Stanford pushed a six-point halftime advantage into double digits before a pair of free throws from DJ Mitchell trimmed the Santa Clara deficit to 49-42 with 15 minutes remaining. But the Cardinal scored the next six capped by an inside bucket from Da Silva.
The Broncos, playing their first road contest of the season, crept within nine points three more times, but Terry and Da Silva combined to score six straight to increase the lead to 72-54 with 6:32 left.
Santa Clara was saddled with foul trouble much of the night. Guglielmo Caruso and DJ Mitchell each had three in the opening half. Mitchell, who six points, and Jaden Bediako fouled out in the second half.
Terry was a perfect 11-for-11 from the line and the Cardinal went 26 of 35 in all as Santa Clara committed 26 fouls and turned the ball over 17 times, which accounted for 23 points.
Santa Clara, which held each of its first three opponents below 40 percent shooting from the floor, posted the first seven points of the game and Stanford had only two field goals in the opening 7:32, but eventually tied it at 21-all on a 3-pointer from Spencer Jones.
Davis' layup put the Cardinal ahead 27-26 which was part of the 17-3 run with the final six points coming from Terry. His two free throws with 1:38 left in the half increased the lead to 38-28.
Vrankic was the only Bronco in double figures. Bediako had nine points.
NOTES
• The Cardinal leads the all-time series 52-25. This was the first meeting since 2008. They had split the previous four matchups, but prior to that, Stanford won eight in a row in a series that began in 1913.

The Broncos play their next five games at home, beginning Tuesday against Notre Dame de Namur. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. from Leavey Center.

On Caruso getting into foul trouble early:
I don't think that was much of a factor. I think our abundance of fouls was a real factor. Anytime you commit 26 personal fouls and they attempt 35 free throws. That's a lot to overcome so I don't think it was foul trouble with one particular player. We ended up with two guys fouling out and several in foul trouble so it was a parade to the free-throw line for Stanford.
On the difference when Stanford began pulling away in the second half:
From our standpoint, we turned the basketball over 17 times and that led to 23 points. We've already identified the fouls as a major issue. We do not have an easy time scoring. We didn't give ourselves many opportunities to get second shots.
On the cold shooting from the floor in the second half:
Credit to Stanford. They played outstanding defense and some of those shots were more difficult than others, but they did a really good job on defense
On the takeaway from the loss:
We want to learn from every experience not just when we get our butts kicked. We'll go back to work and see what the tape shows us.
