Men’s Basketball Rolls Past Notre Dame de Namur 101-54 on Tuesday

HIGHLIGHTS: Men's Basketball Defeats Notre Dame de Namur

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's basketball rolled past Notre Dame de Namur, 101-54, behind five players with double digit scoring in the preliminary round game of the Cable Car Classic on Tuesday night.

Each of the twelve Broncos who saw the floor scored, led by a trio of players – Guglielmo Caruso, Trey Wertz and DJ Mitchell - with 14 points.

Mitchell had an efficient game hitting all four of his field goals and went 3 of 4 from the line.  He also grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds to record his first career double-double.  Tahj Eaddy added 13 points and Jalen Williams chipped in with 12.  

Santa Clara (4-1) closed out the first half outscoring Notre Dame de Namur, 30-8, after a slow start against the Argonauts zone defense and headed into the locker room with a 40-21 lead.

Trey Wertz keyed the Broncos run midway through the first half hitting three 3-pointers during the stretch.  The sophomore guard finished the game with four trifectas and a game-high six assists while turning the ball over just once.

There were only 15 turnovers in the game, which served as an exhibition contest for Notre Dame de Namur (0-2). The Argonuats had 10 of the turnovers, leading to 17 points. 

For the game, the Bronco hoisted 38 shots from behind the arc and connected on 17 against the zone.  Eight Broncos made at least one 3-pointer led by Wertz's four and three each by Mitchell and Eaddy.  Santa Clara assisted on 24 of the 32 field goals.

The Broncos held the Argonauts to 32 percent shooting from the floor, the fourth time in five games this season holding the opposition in the 30 percent range, and 23 percent behind the arc while outrebounding the Division II opponent 53-33.

Ajay Singh had a game-high 20 points on 9-for-15 shooting and Trevor Thompson scored 16 points and pulled down a team-high five rebounds.

• In a series that began in 2005, Santa Clara leads 3-0. The Broncos defeated the Argonauts, 85-36, on Dec. 20, 2005, and 64-47 on Dec. 13, 2008.
