"In my opinion, there is no better basketball mind in the game than Steve's. His knowledge in all areas is outstanding and since he has been here, he has been involved in all aspects of the program. He is critical to our offensive game plans and is just a tremendous teacher of the game. Santa Clara is very fortunate to have Steve in the athletic department." -- Dick Davey on Seandel

Over the years, Santa Clara University has produced a history of solid assistant basketball coaches. In the 1960's, Dick Garibaldi was an assistant for Bob Feerick before earning the head position. After that, Carroll Williams served as an assistant for Garibaldi prior to his term as head coach. Current Bronco mentor Dick Davey was Williams' top assistant before he assumed the reigns of the program.

So, when Davey was hired as Santa Clara's head coach in the fall of 1992, he knew he had big shoes to fill to find the right person to highlight his coaching staff.

Steve Seandel has proved Davey's hiring to be a wise decision, having earned a promotion four years ago to the title of associate head coach. He is deeply involved in all phases of the Bronco program, most notably recruiting, scheduling and the team's offensive strategies.

After spending the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons as an assistant coach on Mike Montgomery's staff at Stanford University, Seandel returned to Santa Clara prior to the 1992-93 season.

For Seandel, the appointment marked the beginning of his second tour of duty at Santa Clara, where he served as a part-time assistant coach for three seasons prior to moving his stint at Stanford.

The San Jose, Calif. native began his coaching career at Leland High School where he coached the frosh-soph team to a 56-8 mark from 1977-80. After serving one season as an assistant coach on the varsity, he was named the head coach at Pioneer High School. Pioneer reached the Central Coast Section semifinals in 1985 (22-5), placed second in the CCS in 1986 (25-5) and reached the quarterfinals in 1987 (19-8). Seandel's four-year record at Pioneer was 75-30.

Seandel is a 1981 graduate of San Jose State University, where he obtained a B.A. degree in history.

Steve and his wife Suzy, a former Santa Clara women's basketball standout and a member of the SCU Athletic Hall of Fame, reside in Los Gatos. They have three children, daughter Jessie and twins Korie and Jake.
