John Bryant to be Recognized Saturday at San Jose Earthquakes Game

Santa Clara University basketball star John Bryant will be recognized for his career achievements this Saturday, March 28 during halftime of the San Jose Earthquakes match against the Houston Dynamo with kickoff slated at 7:30 pm.

Bryant enjoyed a decorated career at Santa Clara University, capping it off by being named the 2009 West Coast Conference Player of the Year as a senior this past season. He finished his career as Santa Clara's career leader in rebounds and blocks, while finishing in the top 10 all-time in points in school history.

His fourth and final year was a career year for the 6' 11", 275 lb center. He led the nation with six 20+ points and 20+ rebound games, while also then leading the country in total rebounds, rebounds per game, and double-doubles with 26. Bryant was also a three-time WCC Player of the week (Dec. 8, Jan. 26, Feb. 9), WCC Player of the Month (Feburary), First Team All-WCC and was named to NABC and USBWA All-District Teams.

His crowning achievement was being named WCC Player of the Year. beating out other national talents Patty Mills from Saint Mary's and Josh Heytvelt and Jeremy Pargo from Gonzaga. Bryant is the first Bronco to be named WCC Player of the Year since 2007 and is only the 11th in Santa Clara history.

The two teams met in preseason on Feb. 15 at the MLS Central Coast Showcase on the campus of Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. The Quakes earned a 2-0 shut out over the Dynamo when Ryan Johnson and Cam Weaver scored goals seven minutes apart in the second half for the win.
