SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara men's rowing is set for its second trip to the IRA National Championship Regatta in as many seasons. The Broncos are sending Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 boats to compete at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. Friday through Sunday.

"This has been another historic season for the program and we are looking to cap it off with a solid performance on the national stage," head coach Jay Farwell said. "The goal is to continue our progression against a very competitive field. The Varsity 8 placed 24th last year, so we are looking to build off that and see if we can knock off some crews that are seeded below us."

The Bronco Varsity 8 crew is coming off back-to-back first-place finishes at the WIRA Championships and Western Sprints Regatta. The WIRA win was the first in program history and the Western Sprints win was a wire-to-wire victory that clinched the crew a spot in this weekend's regatta.

"Coming off the Western Sprints win, the Varsity 8 has been working hard and performing well in preparation for the IRA regatta," Farwell said. "Our focus and effort have not fallen off during this three-week period, which says a lot about this group."

Varsity 8 Lineup

Grace Anne D'Amico (cox), Michael Brewer, Grant Findlay, Peter Morton, Patrick Doyle, Thatcher Bouck, Ian Crutchlow, James Martino, Chris Szigeti (One senior, two juniors, five sophomores, one freshman)

"All the guys in the Varsity 8 except for one raced at the regatta last year so everyone should be relatively comfortable with their surroundings.  This is still a relatively young boat ... it will be another great opportunity for us to see how we match up against the best collegiate crews in the country."

Varsity 4 Lineup

Drew Del Toro (cox), Max Clemence, Ethan Drapac, Nick Cisneros, Matt Rote (One junior, two sophomores, two freshmen)

"This will be the first trip back East for this group and I know they are looking forward to attending the regatta," Farwell said. "This four has some great potential and they have been making good progress over the last few weeks. For this group we want to make sure that they stay focused and composed — just execute the race plan with maximum effort."

Last Season

Last season, Santa Clara's Varsity 8 boat made its debut at the IRA Regatta. It marked the first time that Santa Clara sent a boat to IRAs in 14 seasons (2002).

"We have a number of alumni and parents making the trip back East as well and we appreciate all the support we have received from the University, athletics department, alumni, parents and friends of the program," Farwell said. "Our success this season and this trip to the IRA Regatta would not be possible without this support."
