SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After a strong showing to start the season, Santa Clara men's rowing heads south to race in Mission Bay against Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, San Diego, and UC San Diego. The teams will race on both Friday and Saturday.

The Broncos opened the season Friday with a sweep of UC Davis at Lexington Reservoir. The Broncos and Aggies competed in the Varsity 8 twice, the 2nd Varsity 8, Novice 8, 2nd Novice 8, and Varsity 4.

"This is an important week for us," said Santa Clara head coach Jar Farwell. "This is an early look at how we stack up against our competition for the IRA qualifier in mid-May. A lot can happen between now and then but this race will certainly provide some insight as to how things look for IRA qualification."

Santa Clara knows that each team it will be racing will provide a challenge.

"Each of these teams has a very solid program," Farwell said. "Our team will have its hands full so to speak as UCSD and USD have had a couple of races already and are showing some real speed early in the year. Gonzaga has not race yet so they are a bit of unknown at this point. The main issue for us, as it is for every race, is execution.  To the extent we execute our race plan, we should be competitive with these crews."

The weekend will also allow Farwell to see how deep his team is.

"We are also looking at our depth and how the second and third varsity boats perform," Farwell said. "Our overall depth has been an issue for a number of years and this weekend should give us an indication as to how our team is progressing. We will have a number of freshmen mixed in all of our boats and this group has performed well up to this point."
