Men's Rowing Competes at Stanford Invitational

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Coming off a historic win, Santa Clara men's rowing takes part in the Stanford Invitational Friday and Saturday in Redwood City. In their last race, the Broncos won the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic.

With the big win now in the past, the Broncos are looking to keep the momentum going.

"After coming off a big win at the San Diego Crew Classic, you are always concerned about guys letting off the gas so to speak," Santa Clara head coach Jay Farwell said. "The win at the Crew Classic was an important one for us and a defining moment for the program but in the big scheme of things it holds little weight when it comes getting back to IRAs at the end of the season. I think the guys have done a pretty good job of moving forward from that race and have started to get focused for the opportunities that will present themselves at the Stanford Invite."

The Broncos will face some stiff competition over the weekend. They will be able to take use the weekend as an indication of where they are heading into the final stretch.

"This weekend serves as the middle of our season and is a good indicator as to whether we are continuing to improve and gain speed," Farwell said. "We will face University of San Diego for the third time this season and Orange Coast College on Friday night followed by races with Oregon State Saturday morning and California and Stanford Saturday afternoon. The competition is going to be at a really high level this weekend and it will provide some great preparation for the WIRA Championships at the end of this month. We are always appreciative of Stanford extending the invite to Santa Clara year after year and hope to continue to provide some competitive racing against some great rowing programs."

The team is looking forward to competing at a venue that lends itself to fans coming out and cheering them on.

"The Stanford Invitational is great day and a half of racing with some of the best crews in the country lining up in a dual format," Farwell said. "The race course at Redwood Shores is a great venue and an awesome course where you to line up one on one with your competition. There are not a lot of distractions here – you're at the starting line with the other crew and it's all about executing, getting out to a good start, establishing rhythm and pacing, and seeing which team can push and endure the most pain and get to the line first. This is one of the great racing venues on the West Coast with a bridge just past the half-way point where onlookers and supporters can view the race from start to finish and give some shouts of encouragement as their crew passes beneath them."
