Men's Rowing Heads to IRAs Beginning Friday

Full Schedule

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's rowing competes at the IRA National Championship Regatta Friday through Sunday on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif. The Varsity 8 won the Western Sprints on May 13 to receive one of two automatic bids.

The Varsity 8 will have its first race Friday at 8:40 a.m. The 2nd Varsity 8 will go at 9:40 a.m. and the 3rd Varsity 8 will begin at 10:40 a.m. The Varsity 8 and 2nd Varsity 8 will compete in fields of 24 with the 3rd Varsity 8 competing in a field of 20.

"We are really proud of this group and their effort this season," Santa Clara head coach Jay Farwell said. "Every season has its own set of challenges and setbacks, but the way our team responded after a couple of misfires at the WIRA Championships is a testament to our teams resolve. We had a solid effort across the board at Western Sprints and the team has been working hard over the last couple of weeks in preparation for IRAs. They are looking forward to lining up with the best crews in the country."

This is the third year in a row Santa Clara will be at IRAs with the Varsity 8 but it is the first time in program history the Broncos have sent a 2nd and 3rd Varsity.

"Sending two additional 8's to IRAs is a great opportunity for us to further develop guys and get them exposure to rowing at a much higher level competition," Farwell said. "This exposure will hopefully give them some additional motivation for the summer and fall in preparation for next year's racing season."

Four Broncos will be in their finals races as members of the team but will leave a lasting impact on the program.

"I am especially proud of our four four-year rowers who will be capping off their time at Santa Clara with an appearance at the IRA Regatta," Farwell said. "This will be the third year in a row for Ian Crutchlow and James Martino in the Varsity 8 and Karl Termini and Brendan Hillman will be in the 3rd Varsity 8 with their first trip to IRAs. These guys have been the one constant for this team's rise over the last four years. Their leadership and example have really had a tremendous impact on this team and it will be a bittersweet weekend at the IRAs as we watch them complete their time as SCU rowers."
