HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England – Santa Clara men's rowing continued its impressive showing at the Henley Royal Regatta with a victory over Virginia on Thursday. The Broncos are one of just eight teams remaining after 73 began the event.

"Today was a hard-fought race by both crews," Santa Clara head coach Jay Farwell said. "We had a good start off the line and established a half of a length lead a third of the way into the race. At the half way point we extended that lead to almost a full boat length."

Despite the early lead, the Cavaliers made up some distance but Santa Clara held on by a third of a length.

"To Virginia's credit, they really poured it on in the last half of the race," Farwell said. "It was a very competitive race with each crew making moves on the other. As the race came into the final stretch, Virginia made a big push to close some of the gap but came up short. Our guys had a really good race and executed our race plan."

"It was a great race that put us to the test," junior stroke Michael Brewer said. "The guys really stepped up and showed a lot of grit when it mattered."

Santa Clara faces Cal, one of the favorites, tomorrow at 1:40 a.m. Pacific.
