HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England – Santa Clara men's rowing run at the Henley Royal Regatta came to an end Friday as the Broncos fell to Cal on Day 3 of the Temple Challenge Cup.

Cal, one of the top programs in the U.S., beat Santa Clara by 2 and 3/4 lengths to move on to the semifinals of the single elimination event.

"Today we faced a very talented Cal crew and gave it our best down the course," Santa Clara head coach Jay Farwell said. "Having the opportunity to line up against Cal in the quarterfinals at Henley was a great moment for us. I could not be prouder of this group as they continue to achieve historic moments for this program. The exposure for the university and the men's rowing program on this international stage is immeasurable and we look forward to the increased interest this event will bring for the rowing program. I am so thankful for all the alumni support and well wishes during our time abroad. It has been an amazing experience for us."

During its run in England, Santa Clara took down WPI and Virginia in the single elimination event. The Broncos beat WPI on Wednesday by two boat lengths and on Thursday got out to a good start and held off the Cavaliers by a third of a boat length.

A total of 73 teams entered the Temple Challenge Cup with Santa Clara advancing to the final eight.

The Henley Royal Regatta began in 1839 and in 2017 featured 577 crews from 15 nations.
